Right now my local track is encouraging everyone faster than 10.99 1/4 and 6.99 1/8 to get an engine diaper or belly pan. In the near future, it will be mandatory.
I hope someone has dealt w/ a similar situation here so they can advise me on what to do. My car ('70 'cuda w/ a hemi) has completely stock front suspension and steering. I use a typical center sump oil pan w/ a single external oil pickup. The pan hangs down below the K frame, typical of all deep sump pans. I have 2.25" primary under chassis TTI headers. They are real close to EVERYTHING. I had to dent them to clear the side bolts for the main caps on the block and dent to clear the torsion bars.
I really don't see how a diaper will fit around the headers, go up and cover the sides of the block, and deal w/ the drag link. Most cars I've seen them on had tube fronts w/ a rack or were Chevrolets that have the steering components in front of the crossmember. That makes things a lot easier than on a Mopar.
All the belly pans I've seen were on cars w/ tube fronts and dragster oil pans so there was no sump hanging down. The pan was relatively flat. That doesn't seem like a possibility on my car.
Seems like everyone likes the custom diapers from enginediapers.com. Anyone else I should consider? Assuming the cheap diapers from Summit, Jegs, etc. will be too big and fit sloppy. I have not contacted any diaper manufacturers yet...just found out yesterday that the rule was going to be mandatory in the near future. Anyone have some input on this? Thanks!

Chip...I will add I have a DRE and it held 8 qt's of oil and a rod at Norwalk last year. Well worth trying to get one to fit IMHO. Eric...thanks! I'm not arguing whether or not one is needed or is a good idea, I know I ought to get one regardless. Apparently I'm going to HAVE to have one to run at my local track, so I don't have a choice anyway. Seems like the DRE diaper is the way to go.

Monte...is a pan even a possibility w/ my current oil pan and stock suspension setup? The pan will have to have a "deep sump" too, lol. I've just never seen a pan built to fit a car like this.

DRE can make a custom diaper for you that will incorporate the drag link hole in it and it will likely run on the headers as well. They can ad heat barrier fabric but from my experience it will eventually get destroyed. If at all possible a belly pan is a great option, it will likely be very large to cover the area but it is the only other option.

I have to get a diaper as well. I am using this guy http://www.russlerii.com/Home_Page.htmlNHRA approved and he seems like he really knows his stuff. He has called me three times to double check measurements so he gets it right. That don't happen much any more that a company takes workmanship that seriously. My tie rod passes through the oil pan, so he is custom building it. Decent price as well. I should have mine in about a week he says.

My DRE fit like a glove and was easy to take one and off. Your car is more of a challenge but still I would say DRE.

Russler is another option. I'll keep them in mind.
Steff...Yes. To start with it was just going to be recommended you have one. Now they're saying it will be a rule in the near future. They might be regretting it later.

I'd rather have a pan than a diaper, but I think it'll be hard to build a functional pan for this setup. Plus it'll be BIG.

This is what I have. http://www.russlerii.com/ 3 years no issues. I sent him a drawing of the pan with all dimensions. Fit is excellent. I did cover the straps are covered with heat wrap. The headers are not installed in these pics. Doug

DRE is the best you can get--Pay more but quality is worth it--You have the thing on and off more than you think his hardware is best--he is great to deal with--DRE for Me I LOVE mine. And...you can get ballistic cloth--a diaper ain't worth a darn if it can't contain a major mal-function--The cheapo units can't hold a dropped ice cream cone--get a real one since you will be forced to have one from now on...do it right the first time remember--That..saves you $$

But unless it's built like a trans blanket, if there's enough force its coming through any material. Right along with the drag link pass through, not ideal. Still I like having something there. The belly pans are only required to be .125" aluminum. Doug
