i need to drill the holes for the dodge callout letters on a 70 challenger rally hood, i need the measurements from the front edge of the hood, maybe some pictures showing this and the spacing, any ideas?

Going by dimensions will be very difficult, and because the letters are so visible I'd be very concerned they look crooked.
IMO- find a hood and make a template.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have made two templates, but am not really satisfied with either, so haven't had the stones to start drilling.

About two years ago, [restorations by] Julius told me he had a template, and would drill the holes for me if I drove up. Never got passed the phone tag stage, and then it just wasn't a priority for me any more.

He's in your neck of the woods. Maybe he still has that template.

Linky.

SV,
If anyone here knows if the 70 and 73 rally hoods are the same, I have a hood and can make a template for you.

Hood letter location is the same on all ralley hoods.
Measture twice (or in this case 4 times) and drill once.
How I did it was to lay a non-stretchable tape on the hood. Build up layers. Remember that the hood has a curve, so flat tape will need to fold over. I laid out the tape over almost the whole front of the hood and 1 foot back from the front edge. This helped make sure that the orientation was correct.
I then drilled small holes first. If a hole was misaligned, I could still adjust it when drilling a slightly larger hole.
Hold your breath and jump!!

I hear Stu (MidPenMopar) has a hood laying around that he held for some deadbeat who never picked it up. Maybe he can help.

Ok, here goes. I used a flexible tape measure that belongs to my wife. I laid it across the hood from one side to the other, stretched tight and taped 2 & 3/4 inches back from the front corners of the hood (to the top side of the tape measure). You can see that the hood is curved and that the letters are not level. The 4 outer letters are spaced back from the tape measure 1/16 inches (2nd and 4th letters) and 1/8 inches (1st and 5th letters). I also measured them from the front of the hood to each letter.

Yeah, it's hopped up to over 160...

How about the location of the engine callouts for the same hood?

I agree with the former post about drilling smaller holes than you need to be able to work them around where you need them, so the letters will lay straight. I also recommend you use some heavy card stock (slightly sticky backed would be nice)and punch holes in it so your letters fit snug and correctly through it. Remove all paper remnants around the letter studs. Then trace around the letters and cut them out. Use these as you would your chrome letters to place on your hood. When you have them placed where you are satisfied, go through the holes and mark the center of the holes. Hold your breath, and drill!
Good luck, I hope these helped.
