For at least some time in 1971, Dick Landy's choice of a hood scoop on his Pro Stock Challenger was a modified T/A raised behind the entry "snout" for additional carb clearance.

This is the type of modification I've talked about doing to my repro T/A hood w/ a local shop who does a lot fiberglass work. Figured I show some pics of Landy's car, one of my car "as is" and a (crude) photo-shopped version showing what I think it would look like on mine.

It would certainly expand my choice of intake manifold options, as well as keep -- somewhat -- to the original style of the car. shruggy

Oh, feel free to throw in your comments (good or bad). I'm still wondering if it'll look pretty odd in real life, or if it'll serve it's purpose w/o looking like an eyesore.

The top pic, the scoop is raised off the hood surface, the second seems to have a bulge on the top of the scoop.

If it were me, I would do two things. I would section the scoop and add 1/2- 3/4" through the open area of the scoop and raise the base to lift it above the hood surface a bit.

Done properly the proportions would make it look kinda bigger but not wrong.

Looks good to me. If it were a 100 point resto/show car,I would say nay,but that's not what it is with the caltracs, headers, wheels, etc. I think it goes along with the overall "modified" look of the car. Adds a nice historical component as well to point out to the purists when they whine.

I think it looks a little odd but not bad by any means. I don't know if I like the Landy scoop vs. some of the other taller T/A scoops better though.

You need to KNOW how much vertical you need to
get the intake and filter on it... so how much
is that right now.. leave yourself a extra 1/2"
of vertical for clearance... myself I would cut
the scoop from front to back through the inlet
opening and lift the whole top and blend in what
is needed... it would look more like Ricks challenger
scoop(or buy one like his)
wave

I like the raised T/A scoop on the Landy car and it would look great on your ride.
My home made A-990 scoop is an exaggerated version of the 65'A-990 scoop but more closer to the AFX raised version.
At the end result, it mirrors Mopars DNA.

Car looks good.

Maybe it's just the angle but the first picture the whole hood almost looks raised, like it blisters up through the middle.
Anyone else see that?
I definitely like the look of the 1st one

I like the 1st pic the best and I think the whole scoop needs to be higher not just the center that way the entrance is more in the "good air" but the my 6-pack is pullin air like mad so,..............

The first pic of the resto definitely looks a bit different than the photo of the original below it. There are other pics of the resto that IMO make it appear "cleaner" in execution.

Remember, Pro stocks back when were cut in half, squished, narrowed, stretched and or shortened as was the practice to achieve advantage.
I would not be surprised that the first pic of the restored Landy car is of a blistered hood to achieve height and aerodynamics at the same time.

Brad those are two different hoods. If you want it to look like the restored hood, then you will need to section the entire scoop including the opening and raise it all up so it looks right. I looked at his car a lot at Bristol in 1970 and the hood looked like the one in the top (restored) picture. It did not look like the second picture. I am sure that was the first attempt to get carb clearance and then he cleaned it up some to make it look more astatically pleasing.

I figured that was self evident.

I think it looks good either way. How much more room will it actually give you in height ? Ron

I remeber him getting into a hassle on his 1971 Hemi Challenger SS stick shift car using a T/A hood at the 1974 Winternationals, Mopar ended up writing a letter saying that they had ran out of the steel hoods with the (CRS the name of the open air cleaner scoop confused) and they had not used up all of the 1970 T/A hoods so they put them on a small amount of 1971 hemi Challengers that had ordered the cold fresh air option hoods whistling devil That car, as well as several other "innovative option" cars there caused a lot of hate and discontent from the other SS racers there that year shruggy I had a original T/A hood for my T/A Challenger, I think it had the hump behind the scoop entrance, it was not flat like the one in that picture confused I do like the looks of the flat one better up

In the first pic you can see its bowed/blistered, I like it! Much better than the stock flat T/A hood. Maybe its me, but I like the taller hump backed scoop but the front openings could be about a inch taller and snag some more cleaner air.

As more of a hot rodder than restoration guy, for me form follows function. sawzall A tall intake and big air cleaner would trump a slightly modified hood/air scoop. twocents

Car looks great Brad. You can't go wrong with whichever way you choose. It's a good looking piece to begin with. Now, a little off topic, do you know where to get the filler pieces between the bumpers on your car? They are painted argent right in the corners. And the long filler for the back? My '72 has the back bumper brackets cut to bring the bumper in close to the car but if you look, you can still see all the fastener holes where these filler pieces are missing from mine.
