I am gifting my 1965 Barracuda Formula S to my son and the DOL says the Vin I have is not correct for a 1965. I have V85258189 and all the books say V is Valiant and we know this. Second digit is an 8 and all the books stop at 7. Third digit is a 5 so 1965, 4th is a 2 that is Hamtramck and the rest are production.
So the problem is the second digit 8. Barracuda is listed as a 4.
The Vin Decoder on here says its a 1968 Valiant, unknown body and unknown engine.
Help please.

My 65 Cuda is a V85 as well.

I wish I had the fender tag, long gone. Now my son has a question, it has a 66 style dash, round 150 MPH, tach and round smaller gauges. Did any 65's get this dash? Old floor cable shifter is long gone too, bracket was cut off and ground down.

EDITED Take this to them and explain...."That's common. The first letter only tells you the car line, it does not tell you the sub model of that particular line of car. The first generation Barracudas, 64-65, were a sub model of the Valiant line so therefore we have to look at the second number to see the sub-model. Please notice on this factory document, provided by the Chrysler corporation, that the number 8 indicates the Barracuda sub model of the Valiant line." If you want a full page scan to take to them, send me a PM with e-mail address and I'll send a PDF.

Well, thanks guys. I now know the reason the DOL said the VIN was wrong. Count the digits, on the title it has 9 digits V85258189 but the VIN tag reads 10 digits V852548189. OH BOY, I can see this will require the Washington State Patrol to inspect the VIN tag.

Ok now another 65 Barracuda question. My VIN plate on the door has what looks like a standard pop rivet on top and a Rosett type on the bottom. Both are scared up some. So in 1965 A body's what is the correct rivet?

No rivet they are spot welded from the factory. Stumpy is correct. The "spot weld" has a hole in the center.

Thanks guys. I will see if mine is still stuck after I remove the rivets.
This Cuda has not been on the road since my son was 16 and was joyriding with 2 friends (without permission) one day and crashed into a parked Camry while doing a burnout in a corner. That was over 15 years ago.

The guy I bought this Barracuda from had it in their family from day one, his moms car. He had shoehorned in a 383, 727, a Ford 9 inch and B body 4 piston brakes upfront. But any electrical or other mechanical work he was clueless. All the welds he had to do were like piles of glue holding the motormounts and spring perches.
I think it has always been a USA model, altho they lived 1 hour from the Canadian border.

The dash being different do by some chance have a Canadian Barracuda? I know when I had a title with a wrong number in it I got a form from the State to correct the error, had to pay for a corrected title and did not have to get it inspected, your State may vary... My GTS had the wrong VIN on the title when I bought it (VIN read 2S27P8 instead of LS27P8). I noticed the error while standing in line to transfer the title. They cam out and inspected the car and issued my title with the correct VIN. Funny thing is that the previous owner worked for the DMV...
