How much shock travel do you want to have on a leaf spring car?

I would say that around 5" will typically work on most cars. I installed a pair of 7" travel AFCO's on a friends car, but that was more to get the tires off without have to unbolt too much

Theyre 25" long! I have no idea how you can have a shock that long on your car

If your springs are moved inboard, it makes longer shocks even stock length shocks to long.

I`m runnin Rancho 5-ways and don`t have the lengths handy but iirc there`s 6" of travel w/2" of that being compression and the rest extension. The key is enuff comp. on the street to not bottom out and enuff ext. to not unload the tires.......

that is exactly what I was thinking also but I was having a lot of rear separation looking at photos of my car at drag week now that I have leaf springs on it. Thinking if I had a stiffer shock than I wouldn't need that much either.

If you want less separation, you need more spring rate. The shock only controls the housing and is not a travel limiter, unless you let it bottom or top out.

We suggest 1.5'-2" of downward travel from ride height, and 4" of extension on a street driven car if possible, on a drag only car 1" minimum of the shock shaft showing at ride height, max of 2".
The stock rear shock length on A-bodies is 14.23" collapsed and 22.15" extended, ride height generally around 16" to 17", assmuning its not lowered or raised considerably.

On my slow ass junk, tightening the shocks slowed the extension and makes it ride like a truck............

Ray.. I'm sure the 9 way rancho shocks would
work for ya.. same length as you have now(at
least I think they are) and it has more control
on the extension.. save your self 2" of compression
for the street... if you bottom out you hit a damn
good pot hole(a normal Mich road).. just slow the
extension more on your launch.. might be at 9.. but
I would think a 8

Tightening the shock is supposed to slow the extension and limit the speed of rise, but not control amount of rise, that is strictly spring rate.

Tightening a single, adjusts both bump and extension, so yes, will make it ride stiff

Part of my problem was hap hazardly ordering a leaf spring and caltracs 2 weeks before Drag Week not knowing how my car would sit. I have 3 spring eye holes and i used the higher one to get it to sit right.

In my living room right now are negative 1 inch mono rears to get the front eye lower and ride hight correct. Also just ordered shocks that are 10 compressed 15 extended double adjustables. Also changing my 350 springs i just put on the front to 300s. Also have a new rack and pinion for my car because mine is shot.

I am taking off Strange SA shocks off the rear. Also plan on replacing my wilwood street vented rotor brakes for wilwood drag setup. Will lose 8 lbs changing the front brakes

Lol she's there, it's the one they make for a Mopar rear. I am doing different mounts for it, I wanted the extension to never be a problem.

Fyi, i just swapped my leafs and weighed everthing.

My switch from ladder bars to leafs and caltracs added 52lbs to my car
