We have the plastic floats. When we did the sending unit production, the manufacturer did not recommend brass floats due to today's fuel formulation. They said it would eat the solder around the float and cause it to sink. Just an FYI....

It was available at the local Ford dealer. Try and give one a call. I think this is the part number Motorcraft COAZ-9202-B Yeah, I think Ford used a float like that on the older 5.0 Mustangs. Check with your local Ford dealerships parts counter guy.

They had one in stock in the part number listed above. It is brass. Cool thing is, they didn't try to stick me with a "Mopar" tax. I left there paying just a few pennies over $7.00 !

That Jeep one corroded due to water in the tank....not the gas. I use the brass ones too and have not seen one fail in an abnormally short time once. I think the gas theory eating the solder is BS.

Fuel available to the largest percentage of car owners has had 10% ethanol (or 10%MTBE for a while) for at least 20 years. In most populated areas it is the only gasoline you can buy short of racing gas.
Thanks for posting all those links but they don't tell me anything. Four of the five are not backed by any kind of science. The Oak Ridge National Lab report was a literature search by a private firm and did not do one second of experimentation.
So all those links prove nothing.
My '64Dog had pinholes in the float, away from the sender, in 1991. I soldered them shut and it is still intact today. I would be equally leery of a plastic float as ethanol could possibly affect the plastic molecules. Most likely the float is polyethylene. Ethanol is a feedstock for polyethylene production, but not the major one which is methane.
Water in the gas? Yes there is some but you neglected to say that when the water percentage goes over a certain threshold, the alcohol/water mix segregates and forms its own layer at the bottom of the tank.
Anyway I know I won't change your mind but would like to get a valid opposing view into the discussion.
R.
