I pulled my fuel sender today and saw it had gas in it. The sender is a 3/8" unit I bought in 2002. It has a plastic float. I read somewhere that some Fords used similar type floats. A google search showed a 65-73 Mustang had a similar one. Has anyone bought these from an O Riellys, Auto Zone or new car parts department?

There is one made of brass that Ford uses. It could be possible it sells at any auto parts store or any restoration shop. Plastic and brass are pretty available online. On the spot could be challenging. Maybe pay overnight shipping if you have to.

What I would do, buy the whole unit, use the float, then order a float and return the unit. Not sure what your application is but most "good" parts houses can get the unit quick. Just my opinion.

We have the plastic floats. When we did the sending unit production, the manufacturer did not recommend brass floats due to today's fuel formulation. They said it would eat the solder around the float and cause it to sink. Just an FYI....

Yeah, I think Ford used a float like that on the older 5.0 Mustangs. Check with your local Ford dealerships parts counter guy.

I like brass too, but I hear current gas blends destroy both plastic and brass. But this photo of a brass one is sort of compelling. Probably took many many years. This photo is from a Jeep forum. Hope the link works. Not sure which float is better. Frankenduster, can see why gas is inside your float? Its obviously due to slow disintegration that took about 13 yrs.

Hey everyone,
I went to a Mustang restoration store in Sacramento. They had one in stock in the part number listed above. It is brass. Cool thing is, they didn't try to stick me with a "Mopar" tax. I left there paying just a few pennies over $7.00 !

That Jeep one corroded due to water in the tank....not the gas. I use the brass ones too and have not seen one fail in an abnormally short time once. I think the gas theory eating the solder is BS.

Take care,

Is water not a attracted by ethanol. Plenty of water in our gas tanks. Some good reading. Unfortunately, in our hobby, this is what most of us are stuck with. Couple articles below mention brass and tin (part of solder) is not very compatible with ethanol. Plastic can swell up if incorrect for ethanol. I don't know what the plastic ones are made of. In WA state, E10 is used here.

Fuel available to the largest percentage of car owners has had 10% ethanol (or 10%MTBE for a while) for at least 20 years. In most populated areas it is the only gasoline you can buy short of racing gas.

Thanks for posting all those links but they don't tell me anything. Four of the five are not backed by any kind of science. The Oak Ridge National Lab report was a literature search by a private firm and did not do one second of experimentation.

So all those links prove nothing.

My '64Dog had pinholes in the float, away from the sender, in 1991. I soldered them shut and it is still intact today. I would be equally leery of a plastic float as ethanol could possibly affect the plastic molecules. Most likely the float is polyethylene. Ethanol is a feedstock for polyethylene production, but not the major one which is methane.

Water in the gas? Yes there is some but you neglected to say that when the water percentage goes over a certain threshold, the alcohol/water mix segregates and forms its own layer at the bottom of the tank.

Anyway I know I won't change your mind but would like to get a valid opposing view into the discussion.

R.

Navy uses a lot of brass because water doesn't corrode it like iron and when brass corrodes it's green. What I see in the Jeep pic doesn't look like brass corrosion. But that whole picture is one giant rust blob.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

All the links are just for info. My mind is not made up on what was said, but it gives me some additional insight. How much applies to our applications is "who knows." What does apply is this, neither plastic or brass floats last forever. Just matter of how long they last. I can only guess why these floats are so readily available.

What I have noticed is I installed a new sending unit with brass float in my tank 9 yrs ago. It worked great till about 3 yrs ago. Now my gauge is erratic when I fill the tank it goes to Full, after sitting for a few hours, it goes to 3/4, then to about 1/2 tank after more time. And that is without driving it around. So something is up with my sender. I know these aftermarket sending units are marginal at best.
