Wow, just read all this. My son has almos the exact same car....color and all. Anyway with a junkyard 5.9 magnum. All we did was put an rpm air gap intake. Scott brown cam. Mopar performance springs. Stock rockers. Headers, rebuilt 904 with PTC converter. Car has an 8.8 with 4.10 gears. First pass on the car it went 12.40 at Lebanon valley. This is with full 3" exhaust and drag radials. Car ran a best of 12 teens in mine shaft air at raceway park. It also has a plate nitrous system and has run 11 teens with an.073 nitrous jet. We run an.052 jet to run 11.50 index. It really amazes me that it really is nothing and runs so fast, the damn thing smokes sometimes as I'm sure it is a high mileage motor, heads have never been off it !

On your car, I'd lose the exh manifolds, get the car to 3200 or so with driver. Those two changes alone might get you a lot of et.

I have considered a gear change for the car but really don't wish to change its highway nature too much. We do like going to events time to time that are a few hours out and the car excels at cranking down the highway at 75 mph without killing itself.

With the just the 904 it would be spinning 3500 RPM, which got old fast.

There is a bunch of A-bodies running 12's with stockish Magnum motors so it does rest heavy on my mind the car could be doing better.

You could put in a 4.10 and a OD so you can cruise
and still get good numbers at the track... I went
with the OD so I could cruise down the highway yet
still run the track... you can keep your 904 and use
a Gear Vendor OD
wave

Car already has OD, a 44RH. 2000 rpm at 75 is sweet.

With my set up I went with 4.10 gears and a 295/55 drag radial
so it crosses the finish line at 7000 rpm... thats with a
5000 stall conv and a 518... I cruise at 75 mph at 2900...
really anything much less with my roller cam and it wouldnt
like it... I could drop a couple hundred but then it would
change my track rpm... I'm happy with it.. I just got the
trans done again for the 4th time... it had issues on the rebuilds
but this time I went through it... and seems to be fine.. it
has all the gears and OD
wave

Change the input shaft and get a stouter converter while keeping the overdrive. I'm open to suggestions on brand and specs. The car is on the stout side at 3750 (I'm guessing as it was 3600 even with just me on board and a 904) with my son and a 44RH its just going to be more on the porky side.

Your definitely need another converter, you are driving thru what you have on there now. I had the same thing going on when I turned up the power on my Cummins Ram , almost no RPM drop into lockup. Granted it was a big convertor but the new converter was also a lockup with a welded steel stator, 400 RPM drop with that one , but it was a low stall, truck idles at 11mph. But since you aren't using lockup no need to spend the extra for one with it.

Headers are in the car! As expected the drivers side sucked and ended up unbolting the p/s box to get enough clearance to snake the header in from the bottom. 1/2" made all the difference between going and not going.

Now to put everything else back together.

Just back from a road test.

Holy Sheep dip!

Car is just brutal on the tires now. Before from a dead stop it would just haze the tires a little bit and just take off, a nice launch from a light if you will.

Now? The tires instantly go up so hard it bangs into second and then THIRD before it starts moving and gets that lazy "I'm going to put you in the ditch in about 2 seconds" tail motion that indicates lifting would be your wisest next option. pronto.

And it sounds like a NASCAR stocker shooting out of a corner when you are wailing on it. Me likey. A lot.

I'm going to have to invest in some tires.

Only complaint about the headers is the one tube (cylinder one) near the power steering was just hitting the box. I was able to tweak it away from the box about 3/8" without damaging the coating.

Shift light tach is installed. If I have time tomorrow I'll road test to note the trans shift points for reference.

I took about the tach before installing and wired up extra leads for an external light. I'm going to have a LED taped to the steering column for shifting cue.

Car is ready to go, only thing not done was installing a new H-pipe.

So I'll gain a bunch of power with the headers but lost a few without the pipe.
