Hey Guy's I have been thinking of changing my heads on my smallblock stroker. 10.5 to one x block 422 CI engine. with fully ported Eddie heads. The little engine does ok and takes my 3500lb car into the high 10s pretty regulary. Would buying a set of better heads help ? I was leaning toward the 360-1s . I know this is a pretty general question but I am just looking for opinions .I hate to pull it apart and sell the eddies if it won't make a lot of et difference.

The Indy heads will make a good bit more steam then the eddies, but I would just go right to some 59° W9. It cost me $5500 to switch from batton w2s to Indy 245 cnc heads through shady dell. It latter cost me $5000 to switch to w9 heads with Brett Miller doing the cnc job. I did search for some deals but it wasn't that hard. Both included new intakes.

You will see a lot of difference.

I had stage two ported 416 eddie motor, car went 10.74 best ever. Weighed 3350 with me in it. I sold the top end, and swapped on a w5 top end. Same exact short block/ cam etc.. Ran 10.38 first time out the next year.
I ultimately got those W5 heads in the 9.80's, on a different shortblock.

There will be a lot of difference. An eddie is a very "small" head for a 420 inch motor.
The Indy and W5 have similar potential.

That is what I was thinking. I know my engine makes a lot of torque but it has never ran like I thought it should. I have an old roller cam 650 lift set up for a 13.1 stock bore 340 in the car now. So w9s or 5s will make that kind of difference ?? Thanks

Both the Edelbrock and Indy heads will work. I've gone 9.73@135mph with Edelbrocks and 9.66@137mph with Indy heads so far. BOTH combos have more in them.

. 2800-2850 pounds race ready. Ported by me with a 2.08 valve stock pushrod location. Pushrod is sliding over on the next set I do. Ran the 9.73 with 11.1 compression and a worn out block

In any heavy car think torque first... let the HP fall
where it does... torque moves the car

Sit down with a sheet of paper and start writing down the cost of switching over to W series heads and it may scare you. Start a post to see what all is required from probably pistons, pushrods, intake, heads, rockers, and who know what else.

I would like to see the list and cost also. But I guess I would need a race block first. I am still running a stock 340 block.

How do you figure 130# more than a stock block... my
car with a 395ci to my 405ci W-9 R-3 block with a dry
sump was 18# heavier... and thats dry sump over a wet
sump.. and that engine had more braided line by far..
but the 395ci was a W-2 head.... but when it rolled over
the scale it ended up 18# heavier

. I know it's way more than 18 pounds heavier but I thought for sure it said 130 pounds in my building big inch small block book. I hope it's not that much but hopefully I make it to Norwalk so I can weigh it again

Jay your motor has a 9.200 block, I think I read that a standard deck R3 is close to 235lbs.

Don't know if it's true but I was told my R1, 9.58" block weighed about what a factory 400 B block weighed. I do know there is a bunch more iron in it than a production block.

i had my tall deck r3 lightened and it was 90lbs heavier than stock block.i went from a 360 block with a tall fill and iron w2s to a r3 block non siamese indy alum head and car was still 50lbs heavier.so safe to say 75-100lbs diff for sure.

......and getting away from the fatt azz R3 block drivel, I agree with the earlier suggestion that the OP seek out a set of 59 degree W9 heads!!!! Member Spareparts has the set in the Racingjunk ad.

There was a very good deal on a set of 360-1s in the race parts for sale last month also.

That looks like a killer deal on the heads and intake. I have to put my stuff up for sale soon.
