The Firecore coil took a dump on my wife's '70 Barracuda today.

What's the latest and greatest coil for a street/strip car with a traditional MSD 6AL? I had stopped using a totally fine MSD Blaster 2 when I installed the Firecore, but I recall a lot of people saying Blaster 2 coils should not be mounted horizontal. (One of the reasons I switched to a Firecore in the first place, for the Blaster 2 was mounted horizontal like a typical big block and I do recall a Blaster 2 leaking oil on our NSS Savoy back in the day.)

Any recommendations?

I thought about maybe the high vibration Blaster 2...it says it can be mounted in any position.

High Vibration Blaster 2

Is there anything else out there? I have not even shopped for coils since installing the Firecore.

MSD HVC here. I had a Firecore before that but it crapped out after 3 years on a car I didn't drive much.

There are lots of options. I make a simple bracket that hold the coil vertical or I make little brackets that hold the square type coils.

Same exact situation for me. Looks like I'll be replacing the one on the NSS Savoy as well before it craps out.

Andy- Will the Blaster SS coil bracket fit on a 440 with the standard M1 single plane manifold? The cast-in coil bracket boss is kinda big on those intakes. In comparison, the Victor intake provides a lot more room in that area.

On my street car (Coronet Convertible), I have the MSD Chrome canister coil (Blaster 2, $48.95) mounted horizontal, and so far no problems?
On the Charger that I race, I have the Crane PS91 "E-Core" coil ($79.18)
The MSD Blaster SS is also an E-Core ($52.95), but I have not used one?
The MSD "U-Core" coil (HVC 2) is supposed to be the best, but is also the most expensive at around $200+.

High Vibration Blaster 2

I just replaced a 15 year old Blaster 2 with the one above chasing a miss. Mine is vertical mounted to on the chassis, however.

I used Blaster 2s for a long time. I changed to a blaster SS while chasing an ignition problem. That blaster SS left me on the highway during drag week 2013 so I went back to the Blaster 2. Recently i switched to coil on plug so I run 8 GM LS truck coils.

I use a Pertronix IgnitorIII coil with my IgnitorIII distributor, low deck BB.
I have it mounted vertically on my motor plate.

My Blaster 2 was junk. A terminal broke while barely tightening it down. I cleaned up and used an old Chrysler coil and it works great with the MSD. The MSD is hidden so most people think I'm still runnin' points.

Should fit with the M1 single plane. I tested that bracket with a bunch of single plane intakes and it worked with all of them. I think it even works with the Performer RPM but it doesn't work with other dual planes.

Replaced my Blaster II with a HVC II and saw an immediate improvement in response.

Thanks for the reply guys. The FD 478-style coil has my interest. I also recall people running the Dodge Magnum V8-era coils on their cars back in the mid 90's.

In the meantime, I think I might put a Blaster 2 back on until I figure out what I ultimately want. work

The traditional MSD Blaster round tower coil internally uses an oil-bath to help kool its windings ..
When mounted horizontally the oil lays differently and is less efficient for cooling. How well/long it runs OK really depends upon how hot does it get.. This is determined by the value of the ballast resisitor, the ECU used and physical location.....

Just my $0.02... wink

I run a blaster 2 also. It is mounted vertically in roughly the location Andy shows... I used a AP store bracket for a '57 Chevy or something like that and fabbed a support for the 2'nd hole on the bracket that attaches to a valley pan rail bolt. Not near as neat but works.

I like to keep ignition and coil matched as recommended by the manufacturer. Mounted horizontally, I would probably use the epoxy filled Blaster as mentioned by several folks. I guess it is same diameter as stock and would fit a stock bracket.

The Standard FD478 coil is a replacement coil for ford TFI ignitions, like under the hood of that '89 Taurus. Nothing special, but they do work. The Accel coil that replaces that one is just $10 more and it has a lower primary winding resistance so maybe that means something. That ford TFI style wiring clip has become the standard. I like the coil because it's small you can mount it any direction and it works with about any ignition.
