Are we overthinking this! we know the initial triggering setting did not change (18 initial iirc) cuz the housing or anything inside the housing was not touched & the slots were not changed for the total. all that is left is electronic issues. What about if the MP ECU was pulling timing (only letting it reach 32) & the HEI module just electronically restored it to where it should/could have been if the MP box was not delaying. EDIT measure the slot length & that plus the initial will tell us pretty close if we (mechanically-initial+slots) should be showing 32 or 42 & I forgot about the can, where is it at on this?

Unless there is something about the design of the pertronics pickup assembly the mechanical advance should not have changed?
I wonder if your JB weld is the problem, or you have more mechanical than you thought ?
running up my post count some more .

Not sure why wehn I changed ignitions thatthis happened other than maybe a coincidence and the jb weld broke out at the same time maybe?

the slot lengths in the chart are reportedly pretty close. (A) 42 total minus 17 initial would be 25 on the crank & 12.5 in the dist. with the chart saying 12 is .435" and 13 is .445" so 12.5 would be .440" & the pin is .242" so if the mech slots is .198" that would confirm it is at 42 total. (B) 32 total would be .123" slot length left & you can access it as WO tearing it down & an 1/8" drill bit would be a near fit if it is at 15 on the crank (7.5 from the slots times 2) + the 17 initial for 32 total. EDIT My BB 13 deg "stamped" slot has .203" left over +.242" pin for a total slot length of .445" a dead on match for the 13 (dist) deg on the chart! this is a parallel slot(s), not sure if the angled (rarer) ones are different, I'd think they'd have to be & I was thinking the angle is for a longer slot for more adv. If I can find mine I'll post the number (& slot length) of it

Why not just upgrade the distributor to something you don't need to file and jb weld? Seems now is a great time.

Why not just upgrade the distributor to something you don't need to file and jb weld? Seems now is a great time. I cant afford to buy an adjustable distributor right now. Is there any cheaper options? Does anyone make an adjustable advance plate that goes right in the factory distributor?

Just do the jb weld. May take a few tries to dial in. Cheapest by far. Be nice if somebody you know had a Sun machine to test with off engine.
I want my fair share

.should the hotter spark cause this and if so, now whar? The slew rate of the electronics is different. The delay for the signal to be amplified and put into action becomes more significant as rpm climbs. DC and other brand factory race programs knew about this and compensated with the super heavy secondary spring. A few current makers of aftermarket ECU compensate electronicly (eg pertronix 3).
