Had the same problem in my buddy's 67 Barracuda. Had about the same distance but was using an electric pump.

This is what we ended up with. Derale also has several low profile fans with shrouds.

Here is the electric pusher fan I mounted in front of the rad for some back-up on them real hot days in traffic and it works great. Ron

My radiator is up against the core support, no room to move it without hacking the car up.

Bob I have a couple OEM direct drive fans over here..... come take your pick thumbs

Yes the outer part of that shroud needs to be installed as said.

Bob, you might have room for a dual electric fan setup, if you can find one that has room in between the fans to clear your pulley. With the right pair of twins, depth won't be an issue anymore.
What is the length and height of your rad's fin area? What is the diameter of the front of the pulley? Take measurements of the location of the pulley, with respect to the fin area: vertically and horizontally. If you can PM me those dimensions, I can draw it out and tell you what size twin fans will fit, and possibly find you a dual electric setup that will fit nicely.

Nice! I like the flex fans. They pull a lot of air at idle and lay flat at speed. OP doesn't have a shroud. It's more like a finger guard.

Ditch the motor mounted water pump. Go to a remote Meziere pump and Dual Electric Fans that will cover the rad completely.

It's funny you say that cuz that's exactly why I installed it lol. My fingers were getting real scared around that fan!

This is just a street car so I avoided running anything electric besides the fuel pump. There's really no reason I can't make the mechanical pump work but the remote electric water pump sure does free up alot of room. Pricey though.

Hey bob hows it going, did you finally get the 950 carb tuned out or did you have to get a different one?
on your cooling problems, i think you need to build a shroud that covers the whole radiator surface.
Right now a lot of the rad core is open and might not be getting the air flow pulled across the fins, if that makes sense?
Have you thought about replacing the mechanical water pump and installing a drop in electric water pump like a summit/cvr one?
Then installing a ford torus 3.8 electric fan? one thing i liked about the ford fan compared to the HHR fan is the ford,s electric fan motor is offset to the drivers side.
Now i don't know if what i have is the best set up, but last year i drove my dart to town back in July in 90 degree heat/ high humidity and my car never got over 200.
On the thermostat i ran a stock one that i took the guts out of it.
But that is how i had the car set up for racing, did that to help cool the car down between races.
I never changed it for the street, never got around to trying a 160 degree one to see how it would work on the street.
also just remembered you have a 500 engine and i have a little wimpy 440 so what i am telling you might not work for your car.lol
on my dart i am using a summit 27.5x19 aluminum rad, summit electric drop in water pump and the ford electric fan.
but if you are wanting to use what you have now, i would suggest you get a shroud made that will cover your whole radiator. that has to help keep the car run cooler. here is a pick of the rad/fan set up on my dart. of bob got any new pics of the duster?thanks Bobby

DusterDave,The width is 22, height is 19.5, the water pump pulley snout is 3.5" and is offset towards the passenger side.
I'm really leaning towards an electric fan now, it kinda sucks to not be able to cool things down for a few minutes when you stop somewhere.

Mopar65, what is the total thickness of the Ford fan? I ended up selling carb and putting that money towards a new ProSystems carb and it runs awesome! I actually think the other one ran pretty good but I was having an ignition problem I found later. thumbs
Also, I'm trying to avoid going to an electric water pump, really want to make this mechanical setup work like it should.

I'd come up with a shroud before I changed anything else. I cut down a shroud for a 26" radiator to fit my 22" aluminum radiator.

Friend of mine fought this problem with a 390 furd, tried everything I talked him into putting a timing light on it ..

way,way off ..set it right, problem was gone

Thanks Bob. I need two more measurements from you. A dimension from the center of the pulley to the top of the fin area, and another from the center of the pulley to either the driver's side, or to the passenger side of the fin area (and tell me which one you measured). I need to know where the pulley is in relation to the fin area.

I used a Hayden 2765 fan clutch with a stock 18" 7 blade A/C steel fan. It's close (5/8") to the radiator, but works fine. It's the shortest one I could find.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HDA-2765/

The shroud is a repro B-body modified to fit. I opened up the core support to 26" as the radiator core is 26" x 19". I used foam to seal all the edges so all the air flow is through the core. It seems to cool fine so far (175 degrees idling in traffic), but haven't seen +100 degree days yet here in AZ. I built the car to run Drag Week, so it'll see plenty of stop and go traffic in the heat.

DusterDave, I'll let ya know. Thanks.

Pbody, that 22" width doesn't include the tanks on the side but it is still a smallish radiator for a 500" engine. Need upgrades$$$ already.

DusterDave, it's kinda hard to get my fingers in there and be precise but I got it pretty close. I got 8 5/8 from center of water pump snout to top of radiator, and 9 1/8 to passenger side.
