Revving the engine does not help. I have not tried tires on the ground with the engine off...My next step will be to grab a buddy of mine so I can have someone on the steering wheel and some eyes underneath watching everything move...

I'll check back in after I look at it again.

FWIW, the only time I have ever seen this problem it was on a 80 Malibu and the problem, other than it being a Chevy, was a kink in the hard line part of the high pressure hose going to the steering box.

Worked fine one direction, hard to turn the other direction were the symptoms. I could never figure out why one way was fine the other not.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

If not the problem is most likely the box. It can't be the pump since that would affect both directions.
Long shot, bad motor mount allowing the header to hit the center link or steering shaft? The engine would be torqueing over when in gear, opposite when backing.

Finally was able to get out to the garage again... With the wheels on the ground and the engine off, the steering seems fine. Really tough in both directions with no noticeable difference side to side. I'm at the point now where I feel confident that the steering box is the problem. So... I'm going to try and lay my hands on another box and swap it in. I'll keep you all updated on whether or not this fixes the issue.

So I just wanted to check back in with everyone on what the issue turned out to be... It was the steering box. I picked up a rebuilt one off of RockAuto. It is a re manufactured unit by the Lares company. Swapped it out with no other changes and the problem is gone.

Wish I would have done it sooner rather than living with it for so long... But honestly never assumed the box was the problem since it came from Firm Feel. Oh well... Thanks everyone for all your help! -Brian
