Glad to hear your truck is doing better. I might suggest you take this opportunity to clean our replace your iac. I had my plenum gasket replaced a couple years ago then last year had what I thought was the same problem. However I found it was a dirty struck iac. Cost $25 for a new one and was 100% better. Just preventative maintenance is my suggestion.

I gutted the throttle body and hit it multiple times with oven cleaner to get it clean. Cleaned the IAC while I had it off (with throttle body cleaner NOT oven cleaner ). It was so THICK with funk, I'm surprised it worked at all.

This morning, I ran a few errands with the Dakota. Got done early so I decided to take a drive down to Galveston, partly to clear my head after all the fussing and cussing done over the Dakota the past few days.

I quickly realized three things......

1) First and foremost, the Dak is a TRUCK and rides like one.
2) This was the furthest I'd driven it since I bought it. Every little noise had me
3) Galveston wasn't far enough. It runs so good now, I'd like to take it on a roadtrip out to Austin or San Antonio. Maybe even back East if I get adventurous.

Haven't calculated it yet, but, my MPG has come up. Normally it hits half a tank at about 120-130 miles. Between last night's drive and I what I drove today, I've covered 112 miles, and its sitting dead on the 3/4 tank mark.

Just need to take care of a few more minor mechanical things, and I can start working on making it look good again.

On vacation... Not spending much time on interwebz this week.

How much have you replaced on the truck? Have you checked the cap n rotor on the distributor? Still running stock wires? Rick makes a nice set of wires for these magnum motors.

The rotor tip was pushed over like that when I pulled the cap. Amazingly it didn't have misfire.

Wires, I went with a set from Advance Auto already as I had a coupon.

The truck runs soooooooo much better now, its like a different truck. I may have to learn how to 'drift' though. Any kind of wetness or dirt on the road and this thing WILL kick out.

Filled up the tank, the new MPG number is.........15MPG...yes, FIFTEEN!!!

I still say dump a can of SeaFoam into the tank and run it through! Then get a good alignment, and you should be nearing 20mpg!

My gen 3 with a stick shift 5.2, intake, cam, headers, SCT was running 17.5. That same set up was good for 14.6 in the 1/4 mile. My 5.9 with eddy heads is closer to 14 mpg, but I can't keep my foot out of it

A gen 2 is lighter, it should do better than a gen 3

If I can squeak some more MPG out of it, great! If not, as long as it stays around 15MPG I can live with it. My ol' (slow) Caravan gave me 16 in almost 100% in town driving.

I just swapped in a set of 4.6 5.4 5.0 yellow ford injectors and picked up a couple mpg in my 99 5.2 5 speed, I have it up to the same mpg as my last V6 5 speed truck did. I have also added cold air intake, electric fan, 17" RT wheels with narrow tall low rolling resistance tires. The injectors made the biggest difference and cost me $50 at the local JY and 30 minutes to install. Idle is smoother and I can lug it around at lower RPM now without chugging.

On an automatic you can usually slot the crank sensor and advance the timing a couple degrees for a free MPG trick. On both of my last 5 speed trucks it caused too much pinging unless I ran premium with no MPG increase.

I thought the yellows were 19lb, I have some ford 24lbs in the stroker 4.0 in my jeep, they are blue. I have some 42lb injectors for my barracuda and they are green.
