68 D100 4 speed 318
This is the huge 3 bolt deal
My old napa starter started getting tight after the engine heated up. I replaced with another napa and it grinded every time i tried to start. That happened for a day or so and i loosened it and was able to rotate it slightly. I thought i cured it until a single time last weekend when it happened again.
Any ideas? Anyone ever put a dab of lithium grease on the teeth to help it mesh? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shruggy.gif" alt="" />

No on the grease fixing it. I'll assume you tightened it good. bell bolts tight? otherwise take it off & another visual & see if you can see anything loose/out of whack. Something is changing (moving). Holler back with any news

Ok, to follow up: So far, I believe it is ok. I elongated the holes with a large rat tail file on the starter body itself. This allowed me to move it another 1/8" or so away from the flywheel in order for it engage nicely. When I took it off before, I could see that it would hit the flywheel but not engage all of the time. It is possible that the bell housing is slightly moved, but I thought these were like a 727 (mine is NP435) where they have dowels/pins. Time will tell. Thanks for helping!

thanks for the heads up as I have a BB/NP 435/hyd clutch setup going into a 65 D100 & I will check that (potential) issue when I get there

Back to square one. It did it again. It may be a coincidence but it seems to only be if the motor is hot after driving a while.
I may try another starter since the old one didn't do it. Is there anywhere I can send the old starter to get rebuilt?
not being a smart azz but try your yellow pages. most alternator shops also rebuild starters.

The problem is the old starter would never grind when warm. The old one would crank slow.
both indicate mis-alignment. maybe some shims?

I tried filing the holes but no luck so far.
have you actually looked at it while the starter is being engaged?

I did with the inspection cover off. I thought I had it engaging smoother. Now it is starting to seem like a heat related issue....
I thought so too when I read this thread. Headers? you might have to fab up a heat shield or wrap the area of the exhaust near the starter.
