Update: I got the block checked today, all cylinders looked good on minor and major thrust sides. The non thrust sides were a different story, four cylinders under .100", #1 .091", #2 .090" #3 .087" and #5 .092". It's at 4.08 now and needs to go 4.10". Paper weight?
Those are pretty thin.. and you want to go bigger... being a R-block I would expect it to go much more than that.. I would think of sleeves IF you buy it.. or a cheaper price so you could help pay for sleeves.. JMO Also I started playing with my tester yesterday.. so far on the flat its dead on.. I started to spin up a tube for testing but I have a couple other jobs that are higher priority .. but it is in the chuck

same/same here .... and even on plastic .... the reading is only in MM ... but that is EZ to convert ....
I think that probe needs to be about .100 or so to read concave or convex shapes ...

The unit I bought reads in MM or thousandths.. I wanted one that I didnt need to convert and it has a program and cable to take the reading to a graft.. when I get done with my other jobs I'll get back on the tube and contouring the probe

Why not list the thrust sides also?? Seems a little thin to me.
Thrust sides were all mid .2s to low 3s.

Mike, do you know if a conical probe is offered for your tester?
I do not know... but I didnt see any in the options

P ... what jobs are you doing with it for "flat" work ?
None right now.. just testing it... I'm sure all or 95% of my work will be ID or OD work

ok, have you tried it on a cylinder wall yet?
Nope.. I have some other jobs to finish up before I can start playing with it... maybe this weekend

Mike, did ya get a chance to check cylinder walls with the new sonic tester yet? I need to order one soon and would like to know results you got with yours good or bad. Nope havent played with it yet.. I have other things ahead of that

no problem. just thought id ask before I order something tomorrow. I'm sure I'll like this unit once I grind the radius on the probe... I dont see why not.. it has some features I really like

I have a Dakota Ultrasonics ultrasonics gauge. We test almost every block that comes though. Some need the bores shifted while boring to preserve the major thrust, some don't qualify, some are OK.
My gauge allows me to physically calibrate the observed reading and sound velocity against a known measurement on the block. The front main web with both sides machined is a good place to do this. Mine also has a "probe zero" function that must be performed before each use. Simply measure the spot, test with the ultra sonic, then calibrate the observed reading. Changing the observed measurement to the actual measurement will automatically change the sound velocity in the gauge. This will always vary depending on nickel, tin and lead content of the iron of each individual block.
Assuming that every block uses the sound velocity of .1825 in/us leaves a LOT of room for error. Cast iron can vary from 0.138-0.220 in/us.
To me, a data sheet without the sound velocity information (verified by a comparative analog measurement) written right on it, would be unless.
I had a shop bring me a block with a data sheet shoeing some cylinders in the .070” range. He didn't believe it, so I did my calibration and test. I found the block to be well over .125" everywhere.
Moral of the story; probe zero, calibrate your sound velocity, record all data.
