After you posted I knew I had a pic of finish and orange mark: I had to find on an old cd of pics (from late 90's), put on thumb drive and upload to post this.
This is "suede like" finish and orange mark on the top, rear corner on the passenger side (with the wire clips).
I've always thought it the original finish and an inspection mark? I can't see how the batt cable would be by firewall.
What's your take?

Does the factory finish vary? I've seen "original" with correct loom orientation and sensor clips have everything from a heavy crinkle (like powder coat or a heavy lay of mr gasket wrinkle paint), to that less texture as pictured cudaman, all the way to something more like a suede texture.
I know we painted a lot of stuff with wrinkle paint back in the 60's (said to dissipate heat better than smooth or chrome finishes) and we set the oven at varying temps to get more or less texture.
Was there varying surface finish between, or within part allotments?

Along time ago we would get the typewriter wrinkle paint, it was not black so after the wrinkle dried a little coat of black went on. The first ones we did were 273 power pac engines with the wrinkle paint valve covers then later the unsilenced air cleaners.
