Why do people check lash without putting heat in the motor?
You need to set themn cold before you can start the motor , correct?
It may be a poor comparison, but, All of the motorcycle engines (Japanese) that I have adjusted valves on specify it is to be done cold. So, I think ,that once you know the difference between your hot and cold lash, cold would be fine?
Mark
On the first time around on a new engine I check cold and hot to get the difference.. from there I always set it cold.. I dont need to burn myself anymore... I set all my stuff on the tight side anyways

On my iron block engines, I have not noticed much variation in the difference between the hot and cold gaps. In other words, the difference was consistent. But on my aluminum block engine, there is enough variation in the cold gaps that I don't trust it. So I set my iron block gaps cold, but my aluminum block only gets set hot.
Master, again and still
