Mike I have not seen the plate you show on any of the engines that I have seen. I can tell you that this tag with 0296 is from a 273 engine. I can likely piece together and photocopy a set of the instructions for you, although most became soiled from years of sitting neglected.
That looks more like the tag I had on the 440 HP block I had. There was only the one rivet.

How can you tell it's from a 273?
The 4 digit Model code - 0296 and he probably pulled it off of a 273.
I think 0302 is a 426 Hemi
I wonder if anyone has a complete listing of these numbers?

I should re-phrase that to I THINK 0296 is from a 273. I just checked what was with that engine and I have two tags with it, but only one was rivetted to the 273. 0270 may have instead been with the 273 and 0296 may have come from one of the bigblock engines in that group in the bus. These paper items were also with the 273, 2951513 being the corresponding part number for 273 short engine, factory OK stamp and a move order dated 1974, the date this particular block likely left the depot, as it had been in that bus since around that time.

The number for a Hemi for sure in 1970 was #302. Attached is a photo (not very clear) of the warranty tag with 302 stamped on it.

Does anyone have a listing from Chrysler that shows the part numbers for long blocks? None of the parts books mention long blocks. I have seen Short block tags, but I don't recall seeing any Long block tags.
Were the long block crate motors only available for the dealers to order and not the average customer/hot rodder? Lots of pics of different short engines - those even still strapped to their crates. We know they could be ordered and we have their part numbers.
Snoopy mentions a lack of part numbers to order complete engines in the parts catalog. I didn't find them anywhere in there either.
And do the short engine tag model numbers like the 0290 & hemi 0320 have anything to do with the engine numbers found on line four of the broadcast sheet. I was told here that the engine code on the broad cast sheet for a '71 Hemi is either 407 or 408. Was 320 ever the 3 digit assembly line bcs code for a hemi at any other time before '71? Great stuff guys!, hope to see lots more.

Are you going from this book? Mine lists a few long blocks but not many.???? Might be wrong book?
I have never seen that catalog, but I do find it interesting. Does the catalog show part numbers and the codes stamped on the tags? Can you show another page? What is the date on the catalog? Thanks

How are the dogs, anyway Steve DeTar
After 13 years with the family we had to put the Rott down 2 years ago; the Heeler has mellowed a bit, still a bit ornery and ever so wary of strangers; PePe le be-otch is ancient, she is slowly losing her sight, still a ladies dog, she's 14 or 15 now and sleeps alot.

How did "S" (Service Replacement) engine programs work. Were these engines built up at the engine assembly plant and stock piled? Did they rebuild an owner's engine then stamp it? Were they built to order? Are the Engine Assembly Date (EAD) pads remachined and then stamped with that info? It seems to me that most of the "S" engines have the "W" "T" and the EAD pad surface looks different than an original engine's EAD pad or is that just me? On the 3 28 EAD engine I have (photo above) the pad looks just like a lot of original pads that I have photos of with distinct machine lines running at the same angle across the pad. The engine almost seems as if it was built to go into an assembly line car but that didn't happen.
It just seems as if the "S" engines were assembly line quality problems that were pulled and then rebuilt, re-tested, then stamped and stored or shipped to parts for.......well for Service Replacements Who knows how they were built or rebuilt? To order or........
MikeR
The 'S' blox were stamped by the dealer wrench that replaced the block, factory short & long blox are stamped at the factory with an assembly date/cid and are GANG STAMPED which is why you will never see an "S" block that is gang stamped (never say never). Most mekuhnix don't have 'stamps' which is 1 of the reasons there are blank pads (not to mention over the counter bare block sales). Sometime in the pre-digital age I ran across the factory bulletin/instructions for stamping by the mechanic, but being that my organizational skills can be likened to a tornado, I am unable to lay my hands on the info at this time if ever.

Here's an over the counter factory HP long block:
Way COOOOOOOOOL!!! Or is it from a factory car that didn't get a vin stamp???
Just curious as to whether that particular modur was one that you had or ..... ....... Any chance that you were able to disassemble that modur??? The reason I ask is because I/we likewise had one and upon disassembly a few nice peculiarities were noted.
Arlo, I haven't taken it apart other than the valve covers and oil pan and took some photos (who me took photos.... ) It does have a windage tray, 402 oil pan and 906 heads and some markings on the pan gasket surface and a part number on the fuel pump.......your engine didn't happen to have a "strange" I.D. tag held on with small nail-rivets on the bellhousing area by chance?
MikeR
No tag on my engine. It was cast 5 23 69 and assembled 7 9 69. Look for stampings on the crank throws and/or counterweights, maybe they're there, maybe not; they won't be hard to find.
