These short "crate" engines came from a Chrysler Depot over 35 years ago and sit rusted in an old school bus today.
There were a few good 440's at one time.
Today 273's, 361's, a 318 and a 400 remain.
With most if not all the blocks was the engine Instruction sheet that contains the info Snoopy speaks of plus all had the rivetted tag.

Info stating Engine Assemblies are supplied only with blank engine number pad.
Also mention of the model numbered reference plate on the block 'near the front end of the engine pad'.

Here's an over the counter factory HP long block:

Way COOOOOOOOOL!!! Or is it from a factory car that didn't get a vin stamp???

Just curious as to whether that particular modur was one that you had or ..... ....... Any chance that you were able to disassemble that modur??? The reason I ask is because I/we likewise had one and upon disassembly a few nice peculiarities were noted.

Arlo, I haven't taken it apart other than the valve covers and oil pan and took some photos (who me took photos.... ) It does have a windage tray, 402 oil pan and 906 heads and some markings on the pan gasket surface and a part number on the fuel pump.......your engine didn't happen to have a "strange" I.D. tag held on with small nail-rivets on the bellhousing area by chance?

MikeR

A tag with one nail rivet was over the middle freeze plug on the passenger side on a 69 replacement block I once had. I wonder if this is the standard location or if it varied for different years?

I had a 69 casting f 440 stamped pad, motor, and on the pan rail all is said was U0G it was in a 70 Charger,, so I am guessing some did get stamped...but not sure if it was from factory or dealer....

Terry, have you or anyone ever seen a plate like this on the bellhousing area? The model and serial numbers were photoshop'd out (by me) but 440 was part of it. Do you happen to have a photo of the plate on those crate engines or a complete set of the above instructions?

Mike
I have not seen the plate you show on any of the engines that I have seen.
I can tell you that this tag with 0296 is from a 273 engine.
I can likely piece together and photocopy a set of the instructions for you, although most became soiled from years of sitting neglected.

I wonder if the tag A12 shows is actually on a marine or commercial engine?

What engines were usually sold as commercial engines? Did they sell commercial HP engines with windage trays and 906 heads?

On the marine engine I thought the direction of revolution was noted somewhere on the block even if it turned the same direction as a car engine?

Were marine engines a certain color or did they also come orange?

I have seen similar data plates on non-Mopar commercial and military applications.
What about motorhome applications.

Possible, this engine was purchased in '69 from a Chrysler/Plymouth dealer so who knows what part number was used/ordered? The person that bought it wanted a performance 440 (HP) engine for a kit car he built. He used it for about 15k miles then pulled it out and had it stored till the '80's when he gave it to the person I got it from. Pretty sure it's not a marine engine but could be a motorhome but thought they would have the VIN pad at the pan rail stamped too? it could be anything I guess.........??? but for sure it has forged crank, 906 heads, windage tray, 402 pan, 440 intake manifold, '69 vented automotive type valve covers, no marine blue paint anywhere, no engine hoist rings, no direction of turn, and no outdrive

Sorry if off-topic, but I'm looking at a 1971 (cast April 1970) 340 block w/an assembled date (10,000 day calender) of 3385 (Nov. 4th, 1970).

It has no VIN on the pad.

Why is that? It was assembled as a whole engine, but sold over the counter?

Here are the part number listings for the short blocks available in the 69 Factory Parts Book.

Does anyone have a listing from Chrysler that shows the part numbers for long blocks? None of the parts books mention long blocks.
I have seen Short block tags, but I don't recall seeing any Long block tags.
