All cars ans trucks in drag week had mufflers on them when they were on the public hwy they were on dot tires as well
Sunday after test and tune, I drove to the motel and then back to the track Monday with the exhaust open. I just figured it was a short trip, why bother corking it back up. It was kind of fun till I ended up next to a cop, then I got all paranoid, but he ignored it. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif)

When Larry's truck is in "street trim", it runs on pump gas, has a large cooling system, has "steel" doors with roll up glass windows and factory mirrors. It also has a full exhaust system with side pipes, plus it is a turbo, which means it is likely quieter than your pickup truck with aftermarket mufflers. It has a cowl hood, so what "visibility" issues. Although it doesn't appear to be, the cab and bedsides are 100% factory GM. The cab is NOT chopped, only the bed is raised to clear the wheel tubs and the bottom of the bed extended, so the height of the truck is where it should be.
As far as emissions equipment.......that depends on state laws where registered. I live in Alabama, we have ZERO vehicle inspection. To get a tag, you show proof of insurance and that's it. Larry's truck has a factory VIN, so tagging and insuring it HERE would be no issue and apparently is not in Missouri where he lives. If he had a tag for his Nova, which he did, the truck would be no more difficult.
While it is true that an officer that was "feeling his oats" could have likely cited Larry for a couple things, the same could be said for most anyones "hot" street car............Just like all these cars running around with loud mufflers and DOT drag radials. By the LAW, they are NOT legal because of the tread depth, but has anybody ever had an officer measure the tread depth........not likely.

Kansas is the same way. No emissions testing here. About the only thing they could really pinch him for is the lack of catalytic convertors. These are limited use vehicles anyway so applying the letter of the law is silly. Lots of S-10's running around with aftermarket v-8's. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif)

The prohibition against removing cats is a federal law that applies in every state. The Clean Air Act also requires every state to adopt an implementation plan, and some states are required to include inspection and maintenance programs within those plans - intended to actually check in-use vehicles. But the prohibition stands on its own. Missouri requires vehicles to pass a safety inspection every two years (they also have separate inspection and maintenance program in the St. Louis area). Missouri Revised Statutes § 307.350. The Missouri Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Regulations Manual provides for rejection of a vehicle without a catalytic converter as equipped by the manufacturer. It also provides for rejection of certain vehicles with replacement engines that are not equivalent to factory. There may be loopholes, but these tend to be harder to find. I looked at all this after seeing the Doomsday article. These issues can be a real pain in areas like Phoenix metro, not so much in states like Alabama and Kansas. As you say, many hot street cars could probably be cited for some equipment violation or other. An issue since the early days of hot rodding - scenes in America Graffiti. But at some point there is going to be a line. The unlimited cars in DW are epic feats of engineering and craftsmanship, and the efforts to go the distance are monumental and impressive. But if DW unlimited is about the fastest "street car" (setting aside "legal") it may have jumped the shark. In fact, the results of daily driver seem to indicate that the true 10 second street car is still pretty rare. Just my ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif)
