it's about as much chevy powered as a top fuel car is chrysler powered.
A Top Fuel HEMI has more in common with a stock HEMI than Larson's "chevy" has with a stock chevy.

Proline power. GM never made a 5" bore center big block.
It's a heck on an accomplishment, but still has a big ole asterisk next to it because of the mount of stuff that has to be changed between the street version and the race version.
so, the kid that drives his car to the track , then changes tires , takes off exhaust, pulls seats, removes air cleaner, advances timing,,,all to run as fast as possible. then reverses it all to drive home. doesnt have a street car?
Apples to oranges IMO. That kid does not change the doors, fuel systems, remove the radiator and cooling system, shocks, etc etc etc just to make a pass. It's a heck of an accomplishment, there's no doubt about that, but it will always be accompanied with a "but". It certainly follows the definition for the unlimited class set forth for Drag Week, but we all know not everybody thinks DW is the be all end all defining criteria.
Cool truck though and I hope they can squeeze a bit more out of it.

Yes it cost $$$, but $$$ alone can not buy the skill, talent, dedication and experience that it took to go 5's in a truley streetable car.

I love Larson's Nova. The S10 I think is absolutely ridiculous. I understand he built it to prove a point, but I still don't care for the truck very much. It's a pro mod with an S10 shell loosely draped over the chassis.
That being said, he drove it a thousand miles on drag week and ran it at every track, and just laid down the first 5 second pass ever by a street legal vehicle. That demands respect, and they did an incredible job. You can't take anything away from the truck, it is a street car that ran in the 5's. Period.
I think people should be careful here. The fact that they got through drag week is impressive, even if they had to limp and nurse it along (portable generator?). However, that truck is not "street legal" under the vehicle codes in any of the states in which Drag Week occurred, or in Nevada. Probably don't even need to get past the removal of the emissions equipment.
The truck is legal under the rules of Hot Rod's "Drag Week" which will count for nothing in court after an actual run-in with law enforcement. My impression is all this was maybe part of Larson's point in the first place - the class rules are not restrictive enough.

The truck was born from the idea if unlimited is truly unlimited, then take it almost to the point of ridiculous.
I think Larry and Chad were trying to do is make a point, but I think what they really did was set a precedent.
It's about to get nuts in unlimited.

So exactly what was NOT street legal about it? Treaded tires, mufflers, lights, turn signals, horn, etc. Plus Drag Week requires registration and insurance from your state???? Street "car" and street "legal" are two entirely different things

That is just awesome! Even driving it 1000 miles!
But, just for grins, I would love to see what it would run in the same condition he drove it here. I bet it would run some sub 7's.
Out on the street, the car runs on gasoline but it burns alcohol at the track. The steel doors are swapped for carbon fiber doors, the transmission cooler is removed, and a few other parts are also taken off and stored alongside said cooler.

I agree that street car and street legal are different. It is unlikely that any of the unlimited cars are truly street "legal".
Where is the catalytic converter on Larson's 98? If the emissions equipment is gone, how is it legal under 42 U.S. Code § 7522?
Lexan windows, spools, exhaust cutouts, ride height/visibility limitations, etc. You can file all these under "CS" but at some point the slope becomes too slippery. I think the truck is there, and that was maybe part of the point. I would like to hear the story on how it is tagged (even though tags don't necessarily mean compliance). Maybe you know.
Here is an interesting statute in Oklahoma:
"§47-12-402. Mufflers or other noise-suppressing systems - Prevention of excessive or unusual noise.
A. Every vehicle shall be equipped, maintained, and operated so as to prevent excessive or unusual noise. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler or other effective noise-suppressing system in good working order and in constant operation, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, bypass or similar device. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in any manner which will amplify or increase the noise or sound emitted louder than that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle."
Would probably knock out 75% (more) of the Drag Week competitors....

Bill T, you're reading into this too far, most cops are pretty cool and are just gonna give these guys a thumbs-up when they drive by.
Well, there don't seem to be reports that this has been an issue during Drag Week. Still, I just don't think street "legal" is quite what is going on. But it may be a distinction that is too fine for most.

What mufflers are on your car, because by this law, and your theory, it's not "legal"
