I am following your build. I would stay with the 273 if it were my car. I think I have some standard bore pistons laying around. I also have some .060 forged pistons as well.

so here's what its looking like, 273, with later model light rods, swirl port heads milled 0.05 and ported to a stock 360 four barrel intake, maybe 2.02 and 1.78 valves. stock 318 roller lifters. and a cam with a 340 HP profile.
its a "guy" thing why build a 273 ? cause we can !!! I'm rebuilding my first car, it was a 64 barracuda four speed 273, my brother and I drove variants and Barracuda through our youth, we bucked the GM tied.
my beater stock 273 lost most street races but I did win a few out of maybe nothing more then bigger balls. so out of love and respect for my first car the 273 has to stay, So to all of you that have commented please continue to do so your help is greatly appreciated and needed. (oh and as a reminder this is a "low-buck" project)

I assume you will have the machine work done by a local shop. You may want take some measurements such as deck height, how far the pistons are in the hole etc. before taking anything off both the heads and the deck.

2.02 valves in a 273, why? And how much notch/shrouding are you willing to accept?

im surprised im plowing new ground here? i really thought someone had been down this road and would share their knowledge, the valve size was intended to be more a question, but yes talking out loud here may need more clearance cut then could be sustained,

just posted pretty much the same reply... I am suprised, it seems im plowing new ground, has anyone ever put 318 swirl port heads on a 273?
did they mill them ? please share if anyone has this knowledge.

Only mill heads if they need it or you need to bring the deck within certain specs to match how far the piston is in the bore, gasket thickness etc. Talk with an engine builder.

Have you torn the engine apart yet.

What I did with my 273 I I went with a 920 casting, used 1.88 stainless valves and cut them down to 1.84. The block was taken .030.

I'm really uncertain. I kind of want to save the 273 for another project. I was thinking something along the lines of an Early-A. Something like a cruiser Dart or Valiant wagon or a Trans Am "like" car for a 63-65 Dart or Barracuda.

They made .060" over pistons for the 273? Can the block handle that kind of bore? That definitely sounds interesting. You think you can make a 91 octane engine with those?

I have the specs on the pistons vs different head gasket and head CC combinations. My last 273 was .060 over. No problems.

The pistons are the old school Badgers. The tops have been machined to get the cr down plus they are a little lighter

.060 over, some head work, and a good intake with a 4-barrel carb should wake up a 273 quite a bit and make it run pretty nicely.

That and depending the trans with some 3.55s to 3.91s it will be a little screamer.

Rather then just bore the 273 .060, I'd go .285 over.

I have in one of my cars a warmed over 273, I am very surprised at how peppy it is for a 273, but if great mileage is any concern, mine would not make you happy, and I would never build one.

You can expect a stock/super stock 273 to come in around 30k. A lot of money for a 273. Of course everything is flow enhanced. I've only seen one transam 273 but that was in a nostalgia car.

I don't think I've got $30k for a 273... Let me check my pockets... Nope... Machining and labor included how costly would it be to build a 300+ horsepower 273? I mean,if I'm not mistaken, the D-Dart pulled 275 hp apparently with a larger cam, headers, and a 4-barrel.

I haven't denied mine but I'm thinking May 300 to the rear wheels. My 273 has a lot of trick thinks like low ring tension, offset balance, head porting and work on the runners. We were able to get 116% port velocity and about 168 in flow. That's with a 920 head, stainless 1.88 valves cut down to 1.84.
