Mike, I have always run 15 springs in my 727's w/o flare. Personally unless there is something in the valve body giving an issue I don't believe you can have to many.
Doug

Last one I built had 12 or 15 with about .080 clearance , a billet front servo from Randy J with both springs and I can't remember if it was a 3.8 or 4.2 lever set at 2.5 turns out and a Cope full auto valve body. It flared on the 2-3, removed one of the springs in the servo and dropped down to 9 springs , flare up gone , but with both done at the same time I not sure which one was the fix... it was fixed by someone else because of schedule conflicts and that is what the guy did that fixed it.

I have the stock 3.8 arm in it now.. I'll drop the
pan first and check out the VB and readjust the bands
then go from there... IF need be I'll pull the trans

Pull the front servo also and look at the springs/ how many and the type of servo and what was done , cushion type that is blocked solid ? ... unless the band is real loose (is the 1-2 delayed ?) I having a hard time seeing it being the fix but here's a little

When Scott and I went through this it was basically
a stock rebuild with a Trans-go shift improver kit

What kit exactly? If it's the TF series the orifice restrictor in the case might be the problem...it can be removed to speed up the front clutch apply.

I dont have any idea of the restrictor or where its
located... maybe Scott will remember and I dont recall
the kit number but Scott should know that because
its what he normally uses on this type of trans....
I bought a trans book that covers the 500,518 and the 618
so I'll see if I can find that restrictor in the VB

I think the restrictor that he is talking about is in the high gear clutch apply port just below the surface of the main case where the VB bolts on, at least thats where I have seen them.

Here's a pic of the Transgo restrictor orifice installed in the case. Remove the VB, thread a sheet metal screw into it and pull it out with a clawed pry bar or claw hammer.

I am almost positive that we DID put the orifice restriction in it, but I've done a couple of these in the past, so I can't remember for sure.

The Transgo kit gives full manual control, but will also "shift" in drive. The kit was the TFOD-HD2.

It's been so long, I can't remember how many springs we put in the direct drum, but I'm fairly certain it was 12 if I remember right. I don't remember going out of our way to add any extra's, unless they were supplied with the kid (which I don't think they are).

Loose band will cause it to "flare", but will also show signs of a soft 1/2 shift (as JohnRR mentioned). Could have ripped the high gear drum seal for some reason too? How about the throttle pressure? maybe it's not seeing full kickdown pressure, and the low apply pressure is acting like a "flair"?

I know I have the throttle pressure down some so it
will shift early.. I'll look at that and the band
when I get the chance... thanks guys

double check your throttle linkage / kickdown linkage . shift to early and cause a flare going into 3rd gear.
