I am going to check into this cause I have a JD dealer just down the street, I did find one 12 bottle case at Advance of their brand which I have used before to get me thru, I wonder if the TCI fluid is similar to the hy-gard as it looked like light motor oil.
Bill, I tried that a few years ago in my trans. With terrible results. The trans had 50 runs on it with Dexron in it. Changed it to the implement fld. 3rd pass the trans started flaring on the 2-3 shift. Pulled it out and found no problems. Even sent the converter back to TA. They said it looked new. Resealed the trans and put Dexron back in it and no problems.
I have been using +4 for the last several years with good results. Just my experience. Jim

Biggest mistake is equating synthetics with "slipperiness"...it's all about friction modifiers and synthetics have them too.

I can only speak from my personal experience... but my 100% stock 727 (4 clutch, narrow band drum), tan raybestos stock replacement clutches, used band, and a 4.2 lever) looked nearly perfect after 50+ runs (and 100+ full throttle shifts on the street) at 600~700hp and 3700lbs with only a 2.76~3.23 gear and a trans brake. Couldn't load a trans much harder with worse parts in my opinion.
I use the SUPER F from ATI. CHEAP, and because of the trans blanket, no gear, and loose converter, the trans would get to 270+ degree's nearly every time I raced/drove it.
Pretty hard to argue with that...

Yeah NOT good... I even had 2 trans coolers on the car trying to help that. Went away from the blanket this year, so hopefully it isn't quite so bad.
It was hot enough that it actually melted the plastic thrust washer behind the front pump... and even then it NEVER hurt a clutch.

I have always used ATF+4 in my torqueflites and it never caused any problems. When I put a powerglide behind my turbo 5.7 I used it too. It caused a bad flare into high gear (1000rpm) I flushed out the +4 and used hydraulic fluid and flare is gone.

I use john deer hy-gard purple label in my stuff. MAKE sure if you use it, you have a brass filter NOT a cotton one.

CRT convinced us to switch to Dex II or III. He didn't like the wear properties on the thrust bearings when using type F. Of course, I've been using type F since the 1970's.

B&M the blue stuff is type F and they have it in stock @ Advance most of the time if not I get from Summit order it one day & the next day its here standard shipping.Not having to pay tax on it more than covers the cost of shipping(they now call it handling fees). I have not tried the ATI yet but like & use all there other products.
PS its a high $$$ racing transmission & torque converter so I am not gonna try and save a few $$$ using the cheap stuff.

I've also seen this, not sure if it was John Deere but I was working the top end of a big pro-mod/shoot-out a few weeks ago and this one car would be engulfed in smoke when he turned off the track so I asked him what it was because we first thought he was on fire and it really stunk. He was one of the very few non clutch cars. He said they've switched to hydraulic fluid. It withstands the heat much better than any tranny fluid and he was proving it 3,000 HP boiling it every pass but keeps on running perfectly. And it way cheaper that synthetics.
I haven't ask my tranny builder about it yet so I haven't tried it. My tranny builder did say I was wasting money using synthetic, I argued with him that I use it because I race multiple classes and may go 3 round and never stop at the trailer and he told me they, he's a service manager for a dealership here in town, have done research and testing and adding just one quart of synthetic does just as good as running full synthetic in their tests.

Same here.... been using Mopar +4 for ever. Matter of fact when I had that small trans shop over in Lancaster CA (Pro Trans) do some updates on my old Lofgren 727, he said run it!
