you can still weld the 360 weights on the convertor while the thing is still in the truck. Been there done it quite a few times. People seem to forget about about the external balance issiue. I've had to cut the weights off when people swapped the opposite way.

A 904 is every bit as good a tranny as a 727..wish they made a case to put behind a big block ..i'd never run a 727 again.

yea, if it doesnt have the weights, im not sure if im going to weld them on or put a flexplate (friend has a used one) in. I may remove the trans anyhow to make sure the flexplate currently on there is tight. Besides, the tranny to engine bolts arent all there so its less i have to take out .

727 and 904 flex plates are different. Make sure you have the right one before you get it in there and half bolted up...don't ask me how I found that out.

i've always heard that the 904 wasnt as strong, and also seen quite a few 904's in there very broken state, due to a bit too much horsepower

Well, i FINALLY got it started this morning---wasnt the battery at all---the timining was WAY to advanced. When i pulled out the distrib, i noticed the drive gear slot was not where it was supposed to be, so i moved it 2 teeth to properly line it up. Then i set the timing mark on the balancer to 10 BTC. When i finished rebuilding the distrib, i lined up #1 tower and rotor, which should have in turn allowed me to start the motor with 10 degrees BTC timing.

WRONG. Im guessing the timing chain is off, once i got the thing running and timing light on, it showed 72 degress advance i had to turn the distrib so far back, the advance cannister was just about touching the firewall, i had to turn it back so far to get it in time.

Sooooo, i guess i will be pulling the front cover sometime and putting a new chain in anyhow seeing this on has about 10 degrees worth of slack, and then timing the cam and crank correctly.

I still have to get under this thing and pull the shield so i can see if the converter has weights on it, it just vibrates waayyyyyy to much only tapping the gas off idle in neutral........

IIRC,that truck had a 340 in it before he bought it. The 360 was thrown in as an afterthought.Came out of a van I think.Good luck 85, I'm sure it'll be a fun truck when you get it all sorted out!

Yea, im not mad it has a 360 in it instead of the 340, i like 360's better. Im just twisted up at it literally being thrown in---loose/missing bolts and all----i wouldn't sell something that shody, but thats just me, i like all the bolts in and tight where they are supposed to be.

BTW, this truck came full circle. Some people i know bought it from VT into NY, then sold it to the gentleman in PA, where then the 340 was removed, then i buy it from him and bring it back to NY. The people i know are only about an hour away from me, go figure---i never knew they had this truck.

But all in all, im still happy with this purchase, i guess i got spoiled because even though the dart i traded away needed body work, it always ran good right from the get go.

The people i know that had it own a used car lot/motor building business. They built my friends F.A.S.T. motor. They are very keen mopar guys. Acoording to the son, they just bought it and drove it a bit, then sold it in carlisle.

Yea, i really like the truck, but stuff like this just sets you back. I'll keep digging at it though.

Funny how vehicles move arond like that.
I had a Dart in Missouri (where I lived at the time) that went to California, and then to Michigan and now is 5 or six blocks from where I lived in Texas...small world sometimes!

Kinda similar story here. I had a car cd player that I bought in Idaho. After I moved to Texas, I sold it then moved back to Idaho. Some time after that, I was in a pawn shop in Idaho and there was that same stereo. Small world indeed.
