See if any of your local clubs give lessons. Sometimes those lessons are for members, and usually new members only and the older member help out, then make a few runs during lunch time. Also check for the local SCCA Regional clubs, they usualy have classes for anybody.
I might join Tomwheels next month at the 2 SCCA events in San Diego. There's also a small go-kart track nearby that would be good practice as well (they let cars go on the track every Tuesday). I don't necessarily want to go pro, but just have fun for now. I know there is a couple other locations in this area as well. I'll start off with the Stealth this summer and then move to the Dart when I get it built up. The Dart will not be a dedicated autocross car. If anything it will be a car that's the jack of all trades but master of none.

That's how I built my AMX. HAD to have it dependable for the street, and handle great for the autocross. ESP is as 'course' a car I will put up with. A dedicated race-only car I have no use for. It is as much fun to drive the car around the streets as it is on-course.

With the Stealth and the 17" wheels, it should be in the ESP class. If anything, I'll just get ADCO sway bars, better pads, and some sticky tires for it and leave it as is. I doubt I'd go as far as Coil-Overs.
The Dart is definitely going to be more pro-touring.

The SCCA designated class of ESP (E/Street Prepared) is a great class and category that retains most cars to be streetable/drivable (although the hard core best cars/drivers typically trailer their cars... which will all be running on ~40 tread wear tires, such as Hoosier A6). My car is modified following the original (mid 1980s-90s) concept of the SCCA E/SP class rules (bolt-ons).... and possibly a few more mods to eventually make since they (SCCA) have adjusted the rules a little over the past years (primarily to weld-on sub-frame connectors... front-rear welding only to the frame points, not the floor contour). And just a few other small mods. E/SP also keeps the cost reasonbly low, unlike "Modified" or "Prepared" categories of classes. Almost always, speed costs $$$... how fast do you want to go? I've recently (last ~2-3 years) been participating in another club's series of events .. www.MCSCC.org HSAX... they do not follow the SCCA type of AX rules... instead, they assess points-per-modification rather arbitrarily... and I don't neccessarily agree with that concept, but... as the saying goes.. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do...". In general, most AX (pylon) events, regardless of who the hosting club is (SCCA or other), will follow the existing SCCA Solo AX rules and classifications out of conveniance. Local events develop good friendships, etc, which are great! However, if you become a top contender, and move up to regional, divisional and then national-caliber events, you better be following the rules of the class entered as protests can and do occur.

True, my thinking for Autocross is to have the tread width of the tire match the rim width (10 inches in this case) to reduce as much tire deflection as possible...
+1 for the most part resist overtiring street tires. in the end its to keep the front tires from rolling over on the shoulders when at the limit.
my 3000LB FWD SRT4 (track width 57.6" 105" wheel base) with almost zero camber gain does very, very, well on 225's. A roughly similar weight 3200lbs? track width 57.4", RWD with i hope better weight distribution, A-arms, throttle steer, and wider wheels, on paper, SHOULD be faster. As-fast-as is still admirable goal. If its not, something is wrong and im going to keep trying until I get it.

See, I KNEW you couldn't hold it down to only 5 minutes.
Hey! There's like 50 seconds of autocrossing and 16 seconds of intro so it's pretty darn close. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh2.gif)
