Hey fellas, I'm in the middle of stabbing in the MP .528 solid purple shaft. I pulled the intermediate shaft only to find it scuffed and galled like I did on the last one when I swapped to my last cam. That was about a year ago. I installed a new bronze bushing and a used intermediate shaft I had from another motor. Removing the old bronze bushing was a nightmare !!! Basically had to chisel it out. ... I'm bummed to see the new shaft wearing out the same way. The bushing looks to be in good shape. It only looks like the shaft is wearing like this. Any ideas on the probable cause of this? ? Any suggested fixes ??? Any help would be great... thanks , Dave

I didn't know the endplay needed to be set. How is this accomplished?
You put a locking 1/2"caller from Grainger or others on the dist shaft to limit the up/down movement to under .010 but the side limit is in the bushing.

Hey fellas, I finally got around to check the specs on the endplay. When the dizzy is locked in I have the same amount as when it's out of the car, so I don't think it's preloading the shaft from the top. I have no side to side movement, but I checked the up and down with a feeler gage and got about .022 of movement. Could this be my problem? ?
Also, when I installed the new bushing I just drove it home with the old shaft and a brass drift.I believe it's the pioneer style, I didn't burnish it.

Yeah, I don't think so either. Hey, are 440 crank timing gears supposed to be a press fit? Mine just slides off the crank snout easily. I know big block chevy require a puller.

They slide on.... it looks like you have a lack of oil up there on the shaft/bushing... thats not much wear but you should prelube the shaft/bushing on install.. the collar helps to stabilize the timing.. as the intermediate shaft lifts and drops it turns so that does the same thing to the timing... put the collar on just snug so it a minor bit of force it can slide.. put the dist in and clamp it down... remove the dist and move the collar up a few thousandths then tighten and reinstall the dist and set timing

The gear will seat against the crank on the back side to keep things in line but the crank should be a very close fit in the gear so I have to ask were they the same temperature and is it on there now where they are the same temp?and does it move still? When you put on the damper/ballancer it will hold the gear seated also I believe.

Hey Clanton, I don't understand your question about the temperature? ? Yes, the gear fits snug on the snout, just wanted to make sure nothing was "a miss". What do you think could be impeding oil flow?? A clogged oil galley? ?? The pump makes good pressure 70 cold @ fire up and between 50- 55 @ warm idle. I've been running the Valveoline VR 50wt racing oil for the extra zinc?? Could this be a cause??

You are running 50wt with a .528 cam?Thicker oil is harder on the int shaft.

My initial reason for running the heavy oil was because my lifters were making so much racket...(Aggressive ramp rates). I'd heard that a 50wt would help quiet them down. Now that I'm swapping for the ol'skool solid stick I think I'll switch back to the 10-30 with the zddp addative.
