Replace the rear bulb. Sounds like the filament has broken and fallen across the other, thus back feeding the circuit. 
It takes gasoline to interest me.

why?
Bad ground at one of the lamp sockets. Voltage will seek ground through the next easiest path. In this case its back feeding through the dash indicator.

I'd seperate the TS/brake dangling pull apart connector under the steering column and (1) working with the column half of the connector with the stalk in nuetral there should be continuity between the white wire (which is the power in from the brake pedal switch) and 2 of the colored wires (A B) which are the L/R rear brake lights. raise the stalk & one of those 2 colored wires (A or B) must go dead and another (C) is now hot. move the stalk down and the other one (B or A) of those 2 colored wires goes dead & the original one that went dead is now hot again & (C) (out to the flasher) is still hot. (2) Working with the body half of the connector jump fire to the wire for (A) the left brake light (B) the pass brake light (C) the tail/lic plate lights (all on 1 wire). This'll tell you if the problem is in the TS switch/harness or rearward in the body wiring. www.mymopar.com will have the colors for you. You can also seperate the harness behind the drivers kick panel to narrow it down if it is a body harness problem

First bet, easy bet, bad/dirty ground Second bet, turn signal switch is partially failing... brake light circuit passes through the turn switch in the column. Had a Duster in High School, brake lights quit. Had no money then, but had a test light. Tracked down to turn signal switch failure. Installed a jumper on the switch, (don't remember how/where) and the brake lights worked afterwards, but the front signals lit with the brakes until I could afford a new switch.  RR's input above should put you on the right track.

What could be bad on a 46 year old car  As already said, it is most likely a bad ground, or turn signal switch. Jon (I think his user name is something like jsinthe rockies?) just re-wired his '68 Cuda using a modern type fuse box. Maybe he will chime in?
