You dont want the top... it tends to break up the flow path.. MOST of the air is coming in via the outer ring filter and then you have the air coming in from the top and they crash into each other... I have a top because it came with the filter assm I wanted but I am closing the top off... I'll use thin plastic to cover it and glue it in place over the top

I just run a regular 14x3", 3/4" RAISED base, standard top, not the filter style. Car runs the same with it on or off.

I use the Uni filters and have been very happy with them. Also used the K&N Flow Control filters and been very happy with them as well.

I've dyno tested several different motors using the K&N Extreme filter tops, they both, one 4150 and a 4500 carb. motor, lost 8 HP I ended up trying the 4500 top at the races on a Duster with a close fitting(to the lid) six pak scoop and the stupid car picked up .03 ET and .4 MPH that was back to back on a A,B,A tests, twice on two different days I run one now on all my cars

Did you re-jet to get the max with each... I know those tops mess up the flow.. I flowed them back at work on the filter flow bench

I did not change the jets, I switch the tops only That was the case on the dyno and at the track I remove the rasied bevel metal stock tops and switch to the K&N extreme tops, no other changes

I like that top Ray... is that what you run all the time.. do you have the engine bay sealed off with that... I'm trying to figure out how to seal mine off with a cowl and hinged hood

I'v been told the dropbase with the bubble top lid helps turn the air and make it enter the carb properly. i'v talked with the guys at R2C, they make some nice filters and cleaners for circle track. last time I spoke with them they said they had a dominator air clear in the works and should be available buy this spring. they also mention the filter lids as being the worst thing for proper flow.
A nice radiused lid will work good... I have 1 buddy that the filter lid works for... BUT he stacks 2 5" elements on each other so it has plenty of space to turn the air before the lid has any effect.. but he is the only guy that I know that it works for
