our new charlies pan is sort of set up that way, it has a 1 inch secondary sump with a oval hole separating it from the rest of the pan. there is an aluminum tube running across the sump with bottom half of the tube cut off. no matter what there is always some oil trapped in the bottom sump.
"there is an aluminum tube running across the sump with bottom half of the tube cut off."
That my friend IS your pick up!
Now just a fitting in the side of the pan? I wouldn't attempt it unless I was running 5 gallons of oil in the sump
OP why is it that you do not want to run a pick up? To save weight, to save money, to be different, to boldly go where no man has gone before??

It will only pick up at the start of the cut point... the rest of the tube is a waste

This will be a perfect place for me to use this guy i was to caught up in thinking about a "traditional" pickup to realize thats what the tube was doing lol. Question? if it only pulls at the start of the cut point which is at the edge of the pan wouldnt just the fitting do the same thing in theory?
Please refer to my previous quote of running 5 gallons of oil in the sump if that's the pick up you choose to use

A lot of dry sump pickups use the slotted tube approach although I have several dry sump pans that have a conventional box pickup.
The pickup in my dry sump tank is a tube with the end cut at an angle.
A bulkhead fitting might not work very well as a pickup due to the potential for having a vortex form in the opening. I think that is why the openings are usually slotted or bell shaped but I haven't really spent much time thinking about it.
All my pick ups are just beveled tubes(dry sump)
