Been thinking about building a low deck 400 block stroker for me RR. What years were the 400 ci blocks available?

And, is there any difference between a 400 ci truck block or car block?
Just talking about the block now...not any accessories or heads, etc.

400's were '72 model year thru '78; truck & car blocks are the same.

According to Chuck Senetors Book:

The 230 casting blocks have thick cylinder walls and thicker main webbing, if you can find one, their your best choice. They were cast only in mid to late 71. The 72 - 75 dated blocks typically have thick enough cylinder walls to overbore, and should be the next choice. The 76 -78 dated blocks have questionable overbore thickness. Don't throw it away, but be careful with cylinder thickness.

The very early blocks, (mid year '71 casting) had thicker main webbing but........SONIC CHECK any block you want to use. Some of the later castings such as the 77-78 seem to have consistantly thicker cyinder walls. In all fairness, any 400 block should work fine as long as it sonic checks alright.
I've got a 7-31-71 400 casting with the thick main webbing I'm using as a doorstop. HemiRam from this site wanted to build a 400 stroker a few years ago. I told him I'd sell it if it sonic checked alright. 4 cylinders were real bad, one checked at .078 thick, this is a standard bore block too. So, as I said, sonic check any block before dumping any money in it. Dave

Ditto on sonic checking. Member AndyF did a nice article on that pretty much debunks a lot of misconceptions about older block cylinder walls being thicker for overboring vs. newer blocks. He tested lots of big blocks from different years and came up with the conclusion that the older blocks appeared to be harder, but they were no thicker than the later stuff. Good reading...
