Dave, great information. I own a low mileage restored 70 bee. What are your thoughts on the lower valance trim piece, I see some survivors with it on. They are very hard to find, nice originals that is. Mine had the holes drilled out, but didn't have the valance when I bought it. Dou you think the holes were drilled out on all the lower valances from the factory or ones that should have the piece? Rick.

To recap my observations; I believe Superbees and R/T's were all supposed to have the painted cap. I'm also quite sure there were some that didn't get them for whatever reason. Every police and taxi I've seen were chrome (no cap)....and they probably are mostly Deluxe models. A high percentage of 4drs and station wagons also seem to have the chrome. I've seen 440's and 500's both ways though going completely off memory, I'd say most 500's I've seen have had the cap. If I had to make a call right this second I'd say; Painted cap: - Bee's - R/T's - 500's No cap (chrome): - Deluxe - 440 4drs and wagons 440 2drs seem to have come both ways. The fact that we mostly concentrate on the high performance models makes info/data on the more sedate cars harder to find. ...and I'm sure there are a healthy dose of exceptions...they are Mopars, after all! Hey Rick,
The valance trim pce is yet another 1970 Coronet enigma! I've seen survivors with them and without them, both with and without the bumperettes (or bumper guards). The only mention of them is in the A05 protection package but that isn't supposed to be available on R/T's or Superbees and obviously many of those had the valance moulding. I don't believe they had anything to do with M81, M83 or M85 bumper guard options and there is even less of a rhyme or reason as to which cars got them ...at least as far as I can tell. I've yet to see a valance without the holes, but I wasn't really paying attention to that particular issue.
In theory, with enough broadcast sheets and survivor cars, we might be able to figure out if it was by date, model, plant, or combined with other options...or we would just drive ourselves crazy trying to determine the logic!

Here's one for your pic collection, if you don't have it Dave?

FWIW, My 70 Coronet 440 2 door hardtop (stock 318 engine) came with a PAINTED centerpiece... The parts car I bought, a 4 door Coronet 440 with a stock 318 came with a CHROME centerpiece...

When Collectible Automobile magazine covered these cars, a designer said what cars came with them and which did not. My issue is in storage, but someone must have it?
I wanna say the 500 and maybe 440 4-doors got the chrome but can't remember.

Going by the engineering drawings the painted applique was used on : Coronet 440 2dr ht's Coronet 500 Hardtops and converts Superbee-all R/T all I used to sell tons of chrome centers to customers who wanted to dress up the front ends of their Bees. As far as front valence trim goes don't forget about Option A48-Front End Ornamental Package which was available on all models and consisted of front bumper guards and the front stone shield moulding. This code does appear on fender tags excluding the Lynch Road tags. I just did a quick scan of 20 Bee and R/T broadcast sheets and whats strange is some non A48 package cars have the trim and others don't.Definetly needs more study.

Great info and consistent with what I've seen. I'm basically basing my observations on the cars I've seen (in person and pictures) so now, 44 years later, it's a bit of a chore to separate all the ones that have been changed/modified. Almost without exception, any 'Bee or R/T sporting the chrome has been otherwise modified or restored "with liberties" and any survivors and 100 point restos have had the painted cap. I'm pretty confident that all 'Bees and R/T's were supposed to have the painted center, but information on the less collectible models is much harder to come by. I suspected that 440's and 500's had a mix of both based on body style.....makes sense.
I'm still unclear on the valance (stone shield) moulding; I know A48 says bumper guards with stone shield moulding, but I've never found any option that talkes about just the stone shield moulding by itself...yet I've seen enough cars to suggest that possibility. This is consistent with what you've found but doesn't suggest an answer.
