Pocono Drag Lodge, near Long Pond Pa. I was 15 and my Dad took us out to see the new Pocono International Raceway. Couldn't get in to see it so I talked him into taking us to PDL which was close by. That trip is what got me started in Racing.
I made a few trips out there before joining the Air Force. Little did I know that it would no longer exist when I returned home.
I got stationed at Edwards in '73 and found Kings Raceway in Palmdale(Later to become LACR) and made it my home track for almost 30 years.
And now like many others,it too is gone.

Pleasantville NJ. Roundy round track. Raced on the straight away. They paid $100 to the fastest car every week. Friend of mine Bill Robinson, showed up with his 66 Hemi Coronet running B/MP..
Took their $$$...He was faster than all those Chevies...Even the ones in A/MP...LOL
Bill has been a mentor to HemiFred and I since the begining of time.

Can't believe nobody has said Suffolk Raceway. Suffolk Va, A long history and some big hitters raced there. Closed in 1991 after the last owners let it run down to nothing. I sure miss that track. Now as it was then part of the local airport.

Here'a a pic of our old '63 lightweight 425hp max wedge at Irwindale in Jan. of '73. We were at Pomona for the Winter Nats. & went to Irwindale that night to get in some tuning runs.
The picture is so old you can barely make out the sign. I've always wondered, was that a concession stand or the timing tower?

I was to young to race then but was taken to watch at Hyde Park in Newark, Ohio. It closed around 65' when National Trail Raceway opened.
It was one of the first tracks in Ohio.

I know that Minnesota Dragways and Twin City/Northstar have already been mentioned, but I still have fond memories of both those tracks since I grew up between the two back in the haydays.

I felt saddened while working in the housing developement where Minn Dragways use to be. Driving down interstate 35, the tree's that where next to the tower at Northstar are still standing. Seeing those tree's still bring me back fond memories.

Although AMARILLO DRAGWAY is not exactly a ghost track at this time, a lot of us fear that it's days are numbered. I think the biggest problem is the surrounding land owners are into horses (the four legged kind) & want the noise stopped. Makes their highly bred horses quit laying eggs or something.
Amyhow I have a bunch of pics from the earliest days of the trac I hope you will enjoy.
#1 is Earnie Walker, track owner & promoter, & our Division 4 Director, Dale Ham, breaking ground & paving.
