So I went to the parts store to get a few items for a customers car and as I enter the parking lot I see a Sheriff sitting there so I wave but nothing........stone face. As I pull into my spot he parks behind me blocking me in and I`m thinking here we go again but the first thing he says is "nice car" which was a hugh relief. I say thankxxx then he says can I see the motor after you get your parts of course and I tell em I`ll be right back. 20 minutes later I roll out thinking he`d be gone cos the store was packed and sure enuff he`s lookin over my car patiently waiting to see the engine. I pop the hood and explain how to make a 470 out of a 400 block and he proceeds to tell me he`s a Mopar guy and needs help w/his 67 Barracuda. So we bs`d for about 30 minutes and I told him about my Evo race coming up and he`s like "I hate those damn import guys" and how he`s had to peel em of of poles and how many people they kill acting/drving like idiots and said "whoop his azz" then ask`s me where I live so he can come hang out w/me. I told him where I lived and he said he`d stop by to see how the race went and I told em I`d have a cold beer waiting for him as long as he was off duty of course. So he says let er rip as you leave here and I`m shocked but as requested I lay rubber all the way down Maple through all 3 gears.............too cool and hopefully he`ll stop by.

I had a similar experience. Shortly after I had the 'Cuda mechanically finished, but before the body work I was coming into the city limits of a small town near home. I saw a state police car parked at a body shop at the edge of town so I made sure that I was down to the speed limit and made sure that I did everything by the book. I no sooner passed the shop and the cop car pulled out behind me. I was looking for an address on side street and figured that it was just a coincidence and that he would continue on the main highway once I turned, but no he stayed right on my tail and eventually turned on his light bar. I pulled over and started to get my drivers license out when he just smiled and told me to forget it. He said it was just a friendly stop, he simply want to see the car. Turned out he was a mopar guy and the reason he was at the body shop was to check on the progress they were making on his Charger. He's retired now, but we still see each other occasionally. Dare Dude is a member here and a good friend of mine. His "day job" is being the sheriff of Randolph co. Il. He has a very nice '68 Dart. It was a mid 10 sec. small block car. He just bought a stroker low deck for it so it should be even quicker when he gets it back together. Point being some cops like cars and hot rodding as much as anyone else.

Edmonton, Ca. has a nice high-9sec. A-body they run. When I was part of the local PD drag team we would get alot of questions from guys while we were at the track about a variety of car/traffic-stop issues. Those that knew us on-duty would stop just to BS about the team or ask what it was up to. We really did have a fairly good repoire with many of the local streetracers. I rememebr one night a friend took me to streetrace that was running for a fair amount. One of the racers saw me & shouted ( ) "Oh, it's my friend,XXXXXXXX , the cop!" about half the spectators disappeared, which was fine by me, but I REALLY didn't appreciate the call-out.........

Well that's certainly better then the last time I talked to a sheriff. I did get to ride in his car though, in the back seat.

Very cool cop story! Don't mean to steel this thread, but I ran a government fleet for many years in the Chicago area, and did all the buying, maint, disposal for the local PD. Every so often our detective division would drug bust some one and confiscate their wheels. Often they made great under cover cars that could be rotated in and out of the fleet at regular intervals. When they got a car, they would ship it over to fleet operations so we could go over it and ( if it was a keeper ) roll it in to the fleet. Had lots of strange stuff roll in to the shop over the years ( some very high end). In the mid 90's they sent me a 70 Dodge Charger that was pretty beat up. They wanted to use it for some under cover work they were doing. They hadn't been in the trunk because they had no trunk key. When I got it up in the air, it was so bad ( rusted frame rails, floors, etc,) that I had to shoot it down from a safety aspect. At any rate, before we sent it off to the junk yard, I managed to get the trunk open. The wheels in the attached pic were in the trunk. To this day, I don't know who made them ( maybe Anson ). They spent another 4 years in the shop storage facility before I finally cleaned them up, painted them, and put them on my 300. Fronts were 15X7 uni-lug and the rears were 15X8.5 shank style lug. Pretty cool wheels.
