Got a customer with a 3,400 race weight car that will make around 650hp with a 4-speed and he wants to run pie crust slicks........

Just curious if anyone is ETing very well with them?? If so, what brand and size are you running? How much slower are you running on them versus a modern slick??

There are a lot of recaps out there.......Are those any good?

f.a.s.t.cars are doing it on bias ply or reps of.so I would think it's very possible.

Yeah, I guess our biggest concern is if people are actually running the recaps hard and if they're safe and not coming apart? And how much slower they are than a good, modern slick? As far as traction, are they comparable to a hard street tire? Or are they somewhere between a hard street tire and a good slick?

I had some 9" wide M&H's in the 70's they wore like iron but put some heat in them and the worked great on the street. Coker is making the pie crusts, I would think they would have at least as good a rubber compound as the repro polys.

I assume the pie crust are the older looking 7 and 8 inch slicks that are just like the ones from the 60's and 70's ? I mean thats what I thought they are. I believe Cooker makes them with modern type rubber on them that will hook as good as the 9" Hoosiers I use ? Ron

Sqeeze, Their is a guy on the hamb who has gone 10s in a T with an early hemi on pie crusts. I also think Mike Koleman has gone 9s on them in his 31 chrysler coupe wih a blown early hemi.
Cody Hurst of Husrst tires told me a guy has gone 200 on his tire in a FED, but he does not reccommend it. Hurst tires are piecrust caps on NEW steel belted radial casings.
I am going to attempt to get my 31 plymouth coupe into the 9s on 10" Hurst whitewall piecrust slicks, but have not got the car done yet

Yes, pie crust slicks...there are lots of sizes available...he's looking at something in the 29" tall by 9" wide range...that'd be awesome if they hooked as good as your tires...

Yeah, Hurst is one of the tires we've been looking at...the recap stuff we've found are quite a bit cheaper than the new ones we've found...so we're trying to figure out if it's worth the extra coin for new tires for a safety and traction advantage....it seems very few people actually race on them though...my customer has called a few of the places that make them and even they don't have much feedback....

If they're not safe at 132-135mph or if he'd be giving up a full second in ET over modern tires then he's not going to race on them....

Perhaps the only way to find out us to try it. I woulnt worry about 135 mph, that has been done enuff. 150 -160 + is probably a lot less tested.

Yeah, that's the point he's to on it...you know how stick cars are, Joel...I've told him that on the pie crusts he can probably get away with a decent street clutch but if he wants to run modern slicks and take full advantage of them he'll need to drop the big coin on a slipper clutch...

I don't know about the new pie crusts but the old pie crusts had stiff side walls that I believe would be harder to hook than a modern slick. Especially with a street strip type clutch.

I think Radir makes a pie crust that isn't a recap

Yes, you're right and they're actually made for Radir by Mickey Thompson...he's called Radir and they had basically no feedback on how well they do at the track so he's going to call Mickey Thompson and quiz them tomorrow...

I'm interested too.

I didn't realize that M/T was making the tires for Radir.

Re-caps scare me as I plan on driving my car everywhere and racing it too.

I was looking at the Towelcity pie crusts and heard bad things about them being impossible to balance.

Exactly...I've found all kinds of conflicting info on the web...was hoping someone on here actually races with them...

I talked to the owner of Towel City. He was very nice and easy to talk to guy. I asked him if I could run his tires on a car that would go 150 in the quarter. He said no way, they are not made for that kind of speed.
The Radir 12 inch slick is what Mike Koleman ran into the nines. He could not run them at drag week, because the tire width limit for the class he ran is 10 inches. When I inquired with Radir about 10 inch slicks, they were out of stock and it could be months before they had more. so I bought a set of set 10 inch Hurst's

I wanted to be sure of the brand before I commented.

A friend bought the Hurst pie cuts and put them on his '63 Plymouth wagon. Even with a Poly 318 he said they had problems hooking and were really hard.

He's going to put Firestone on his '65 Dodge so we'll see how that goes.

I really want the nostalgia look but the Nitto 555's are looking pretty good for my use right now...

Hey Mike, what sizes do you have? My guy is looking for something about 29" tall and 8.5-9" wide...
