WalMart Type F will get the job done. If you transbrake you will need to change fluid often. I put a trans temp in one time, you only need it for one race , after that you KNOW what is happening and when. On the button it can go up 100 degrees a second, will drop instantly when button is released. No trans brake, never a problem with temp if unit is healthy.

Was out today, had a senior moment, and went into a Wallymart to get some type F, going to change the filter on the D100 this weekend. Totally forgot about the "black Friday" thing, I was early for that to start but they were getting ready, place was crawling with early loiterers and LOTS of employees. OH, and they had 7 qts of type F, at 3.48/qt. I was looking for gallon jugs, a couple of 'em. nada. And I certainly wasn't expecting it to be 3.48 /qt either! I guess it's been a while since I bought any house brand stuff, was expecting maybe 1.50-2.00 ea. Going back to my regular jobber, and get name brand for probably just a little more.
It takes gasoline to interest me.

ATF+4 is for the newer style OD trans not the older 3 speed.
Use whatever fluid you want, but finger wagging is uncalled for.
ALLPAR Torqueflite Page Also.... ALLPAR Tranny Fix Page Especially the part that says "Chrysler TSB# 21-006-01 notes that all current vehicles only use ATF+4 type 9602, part 05013457AA (for quart bottles). The advantages of ATF+4 over +3 (and Dexron for that matter) include: •Better anti-wear and anti-corrosion properties — and maintains its friction properties over time •Controls oxidation - eliminates deposits •Anti-foaming •Superior low temperature operation
You can use ATF+4 with all older Chrysler transmissions (except some Jeeps, as noted earlier, and very early automatics — before the TorqueFlite).
Rich Hutchinson wrote: [In 1989-91] both the manual and the dipstick said Dexron was okay, which is wrong. For non lockup 3 spds, either can be used. For lockup 3 spds up to some date in 1999 either could be used but ATF+3 was prefered. After that date ATF+4 is to be used in all automatics.
The best bet for transmissions made before 1998 is to just use ATF+4. Even if it's not needed, it's better than Dexron. "
It is a fact that ATF+4 MUST be used on the newer 4-speeds (except as noted), but there is no such prohibition on ATF+4 for the 3-speed torqueflite - only the older pre-TF trannies.

The backwards compatibility issue with ATF+4 has a lot to do with dealers only having to stock one fluid.

It may be economics at work, but in reality why stock an older type fluid (or an ATF+2, ATF+3, Dexron III, etc.), when ATF+4 is a superior fluid to the other/older fluids and, except as noted with the Jeep and pre-TF trannies, is fully backwards compatible.

Depends on the intended usage and the ATF+4 is "superior" in lube properties but not friction properties that many desire.
Non-lockup 3-speeds don't need the lube properties.

Since you've set yourself up as the top expert on the subject - then use whatever you want. It's no skin off my back, and there's no need to be defensive about it. My only reason for saying anything was to participate in the conversation and bring some reference material in that others might find useful - or not. If that is problematic, then perhaps we need to take this off-line.
Have a good evening.
