Now that I have my carb mostly straightened out, time to tackle the ignition. I have an orange-box kit ready to install, however, on '69 there was NO box. What thinks everyone between the orange box and the Ignitor? I actually sort-of hate to add something that looks out of place on it, I'm weird that way...

The Pertronix needs a dist with very tight bushing/shaft play. The point tension makes alot of em wear significantly over time (check yours). AutoZone reportedly has rebuild point ones for reasonable money (exchange). I'd suggest the Pertronix II with the recommended coil for it

Thanks! Yeah, I'm planning on the whole shootin' match...new distributor, plugs, wires, ignition, etc. I've had the car since '99 and I know I've never changed any of that stuff.

CJ - thank you for this post. I have the same dilemma/question in my mind for my 71 Charger 500 383 4-speed AC car. Thanks! ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbs.gif)

The Pertronics has one major problem, and that is the distributor you put it in. By the time you're asking this question, the distributor is worn. Maybe not worn out, but worn. Also, the distributor has the stock slow curve in it. The MP kit has a BRAND NEW distributor with a quick curve and it will wake your engine up unless you have had the distributor recurved somewhere in the past. It is noticeably better for driving.
What I am running is the electronic distributor out of the kit with a MSD 6A and Jacobs chrome coil. I bought that years ago because it fit in my stock coil bracket. I used the orange box for more than 20 years with the Jacobs coil and replaced it with the MSD when the orange box started acting funny.
So, IMHO, the real answer is either: 1. Use the new electronic distributor you now have with the box of your choice, or 2. Install the Pertronics in a rebuilt, recurved distributor.
Most people who look under your hood will have no idea that the orange box mounted to your firewall isn't factory equipment.

The chrome box is more reliable than the orange box but both have one big advantage over a pertronics. If they die I can get home on any old junkyard or parts store box. Won't happen with most other systems such as a pertronics or MSD ignition. If you are going to use the orange box I would recommend keeping a cheap spare in the glovebox along with a ballast resistor.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Orange box sux , put the pertronix in the distributor.
Orange box sux, only if it a late 90's or newer !! And if you put the Pertronics in a dual point, you still have to make it fit,the mounting holes are off ! ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif)
