Now that I have my carb mostly straightened out, time to tackle the ignition. I have an orange-box kit ready to install, however, on '69 there was NO box. What thinks everyone between the orange box and the Ignitor? I actually sort-of hate to add something that looks out of place on it, I'm weird that way...

Pertronix without a doubt, the Mopar Electronic ignition system is so primitive in comparison,....plus if fits under the stock cap

Wow, that was quick, I'll be having a Mopar #3690428 for sale, then! New in the box!

The Pertronix needs a dist with very tight bushing/shaft play. The point tension makes alot of em wear significantly over time (check yours). AutoZone reportedly has rebuild point ones for reasonable money (exchange). I'd suggest the Pertronix II with the recommended coil for it

Thanks! Yeah, I'm planning on the whole shootin' match...new distributor, plugs, wires, ignition, etc. I've had the car since '99 and I know I've never changed any of that stuff.

Our preference is to install the Mopar electronic distributor (Mallory internals), Blaster II coil and the Chrome Box. This system is proven and works well for street/drag setups, and if something does crap out it is EZ to get replacements..

Just my $0.05...

CJ - thank you for this post. I have the same dilemma/question in my mind for my 71 Charger 500 383 4-speed AC car. Thanks!

Well I bought my orange box in 1999 and it has and still is flawless and never misses a beat. It seems the newer ones must have problems as mine has worked great and never failed and does not pull any timing out at higher rpm's. In fact when my son used it on his 400 he shifted at 6500 and it worked great. When he put MSD on the car it ran the same and did not go any faster. Right now I have it on my 63 Sport Fury and its running 10.70's and never misses a beat. If you have an older orange box it might work fine but it seems most that have trouble have bought their orange box in the last 5 or so years. You can see my orange box on the firewall just behind the carb next to the voltage reg. Ron

The Pertronics has one major problem, and that is the distributor you put it in.
By the time you're asking this question, the distributor is worn. Maybe not worn out, but worn. Also, the distributor has the stock slow curve in it.
The MP kit has a BRAND NEW distributor with a quick curve and it will wake your engine up unless you have had the distributor recurved somewhere in the past.
It is noticeably better for driving.

What I am running is the electronic distributor out of the kit with a MSD 6A and Jacobs chrome coil. I bought that years ago because it fit in my stock coil bracket. I used the orange box for more than 20 years with the Jacobs coil and replaced it with the MSD when the orange box started acting funny.

So, IMHO, the real answer is either:
1. Use the new electronic distributor you now have with the box of your choice, or
2. Install the Pertronics in a rebuilt, recurved distributor.

Most people who look under your hood will have no idea that the orange box mounted to your firewall isn't factory equipment.

R.

The chrome box is more reliable than the orange box but both have one big advantage over a pertronics. If they die I can get home on any old junkyard or parts store box. Won't happen with most other systems such as a pertronics or MSD ignition. If you are going to use the orange box I would recommend keeping a cheap spare in the glovebox along with a ballast resistor.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

But with the Pertronix, if it dies, just take it out and put the points, condenser, and rotor back in. Cheaper to have a set of points than a box.

Pertronix sells completely new distributors all set up with there internals. This is what I would like to use. The question I have is how do you modify the curve on one of their distributors?

Orange box sux, only if it a late 90's or newer !! And if you put the Pertronics in a dual point, you still have to make it fit,the mounting holes are off !

I have not had one but I'd think it'd be the same: weights/slots/springs & I'd suggest initial/total/springs/vac adv dialed in in that order

Well, my "orange box" is dated 2006, so it looks like I could have one or the other.

But I'm not seeing a replacement Pertronix distributor for RB.

I have never had a problem w/ an orange box ever. This car went 11.38 with an orange box and MP distrib. I swicthed to a MSD unit so I could have a a rev limiter, and I see zero gain in performace or drivability. As mentioned nobody will care if you have a ECM or not. It's a 15-20 minute job to do the swap.
