I fought an issue similar to this that was causing my car to smoke. I ended up changing to a different style of viton seal. I had my heads ported and no guide work was done and I used the same valves and I didn't have a problem before hand. I was convinced it was intake gaskets until I tore the heads apart and noticed how much oil was on the valves, both intake and exhaust. The exhaust valves had some much oil on the stems that it ran down the valves and made a ring on the paper towel they were sitting on after I tore the heads down.

The seals the head porter put on them should have worked, I have no idea why they didn't. They were a viton seal designed to clear triple springs. I replaced them with a viton seals with a steal jacket, the kind where viton is on the guide and the valve with a steel jacket around it at the guide and a spring at the valve. This fixed my smoking problem.

I tried several intake gaskets, had the intake milled, the intake side of the head milled, and pressure checked every orifice that was near oil in the heads. I still can't believe that $16 in seals fixed this problem but it did. It burned about 1/2 quart of oil on drag week and hasn't smoked a bit since.

yea I just did that. the guides do have some wear on them. the guides need to be replaced to rule that out. along with some drainage groves to help keep the oil from setting on the spring pocket.

Sometimes it's easier to use a straightedge with a light behind one side to show any low spots. if it looks okay it's time to move on to the feeler gauges or clay to make sure the angles match up.

Remove all gasket material and silicone so both intake and heads are perfectly clean. roll out some strips of clay and place them along the top and bottom of the ports on both sides. put the intake on and lightly snug the intake bolts. remove intake and measure the thickness of the clay. if the angles are right, the clay will be squished out flat, if not, you'll see either the top or bottom strips will be thicker than the other. same idea with feeler gauges. lightly snug intake and measure top and bottom gaps. record any differences you find.

and the angle is = 48* for both - in my case. That'll be $5.

It will help if you spray some WD 40 on the intake surface before you set it on to keep the clay from sticking upon removal.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

ok how does one check the angle on the heads and intake?

My '68 bee leaked in this area so I cleaned off all the gasket material & sealant and set the intake on the motor. I made sure the intake was seated as squarely as possible, then I used a set of feeler gauges to see if there were any gaps between the intake and head sealing surface. I found that there was .005 gap at the bottom of the intake ports and zero at the top. Took the measurements to a good machinist, he shaved about .007 off each intake face & corrected the angle & it has sealed perfectly since. The ports actually lined up better too since the heads & block had been shaved a little when I rebuilt the motor.

Tony you could take your heads to Performance Only (Dan) and let him completely epoxy the intake runners he is real good at epoxy. Sorry Dan it took me so long to publicly tell you thanks.....

If my memory is good you have 360-1 heads. If so button everything up except the carb and hook up a small compressor to the intake, oil system and coolant. My Indys 230-2 were so bad they could of been used for a sprinker. It foamed under the spring cup and other places. Matt

i was actually thinking about making a plate to cover the intake port with an air fitting to pressure each port.

I'm telling you once Performance Only (Dan) works on them nothing will leak, nothing 2lbs. of epoxy won't fix.Right Dan care to comment or are you still in cricket mode?

You mentioned possibly bad guides and seals. Is it possible there is so much oil being pulled by them at idle that that is part of the problem, and reversion pushes some of the oil along the runner back to the intake face? I have similar problems caused by block flex and had to go to silicon only, no gasket. I can get away with it due to alky and injection.
