I'm thinking they should be 8 3/4 but my 70 convertible has a 8.25 rear? It appears to be original. Is this correct?

Take care,
Rick

Not unusual for a 318 car I would think. The 8.25 first came out in '69.

What (if you have it) does the broadcast sheet say for the axle code?

Stock, they had 7 1/4s.
Optional in various ways was the 8.75.
Seriously doubt any Danas backed 318s, but never say never with Ma Mopar...

I've only seen 2 rears used under 70 E's with 318's...either 8 3/4 or 7 1/4, with 3 spd manuals having the 8 3/4, and autos being equipped with either axle...

Never say never... my '70 Challenger 318 WSS has a 8.75 with pinion snubber. Also hemi style factory rolled front fender lips. Maybe it started down the line as something else and got changed. Who knows.

I bought and still have a 1970 barracuda 1n 1973. It was a 318 standard 3 speed on the floor with an 8-3/4 rear.

Most have the 8.75. /6 and maybe a few 318 cars had the 7.25. Maybe a few /6 cars had the 8.75.
The 8.25 was not made in the E-body specs. No 8.25 E's.

That chart is not completely accurate.
7.25 was use in E-body
8.25 used 69 and up B. Most 71 B's had them
8.75 was used through 74 in trucks and B-body and E.
9.25 was never used in a 72 B and early 73. Showed up in trucks in 75

Thanks Mark I provided the pic more as a visual aid as most people get confused when they see the 7 1/4 axle....the 8 3/4 is an easy ID, but it's funny when some think the 7 1/4 is a DANA 60

Not to hijack the thread but....

Is there a trick to getting the plug out of the 7 1/4 to check the level and to change the gear oil? I haven't had much success and I'm guessing the lube is original to the car.

Also, would a 7 1/4 have a ratio tag???
