It is called Fading Color and was in Mopar Muscle and can be seen on their website . There is also a link on Hughes Engines website. Somebody had posted a link on here at one time also . If I get time in the near future I want to put links up from my website for all of my articles but its time consuming for me .

Keith has written some other good articles for MM.... But evidently reading how to put mothballs in your car over the winter to keep out pests is more important...

i just read the article.....and two things came to mind right away.
first was......thats an awful lot of work for such a short amount of text.
its a situation where the numbers really are the whole story.

the other is.....and this is something ive preached to cam buyers for years......buy the cam from an engine builder who is well versed in the type of motor/combo you're building. someone who is intimately familiar with it.

many(most?) people think the cam manufacturers are the best place for cam advice.
i would agree that if you're looking for have someone develope some new lobes for you, a cam company is the place for direction and guidance.
but if you are just trying to buy a cam, an engine builder who has done a lot of testing in motors like what you're building is usually going to have a better handle on what should work.
in this case, the Comp cams were straight out of the catalog.
now, i'm a Comp dealer, and i like their stuff, and i sell a lot of them......but......for pretty much any type of Mopar "race" application......what they have in the catalog is not usually what i'm looking for.
and as far as SB Mopar flat tappet solid lifter cams go, i think what they have in the catalog leaves a bit to be desired.
so, in this series of tests, the cam that seemed to work the best came from an experienced Mopar engine builder.....who just so happens to sell cams.
seems logical to me.

a little FYI.....the Lunati cam is actually from a set of old Ultra-Dyne lobes. they are the NF904 series.
shortly after UD closed, Harold was working with Lunati, and several UD grinds found their way into the catalog......thats one of them.

nice little article Keith

Well said Dwayne!!
I have told people for years, call a cam company and ask them what would work best, then call them a week later and you may get a totally different suggestion . I tested a couple others that were not part of the article, but what I thought would work better did.
Another funny story from that whole deal was when I asked for a camshaft for a 421 inch small block and was given a part number for the biggest flat tappet grind in the catalog, for a big block. When I told the guy that was wrong he gave me the part number for the biggest small block grind which had very different specs.
Hughes and Howard's were the two that actually asked for flow numbers, along with several other things that I would consider.

My car is not a purpose built race car and will never be as long as I own it. It's a street/strip car and has to run on pump gas. Five years ago when I built the 408 that's in my Dart now one of my racing buddies (chevy guy) gave me a phone number to "his guy" at Comp Cams. This guy does nascar cams and cams for the big name drag racers. So I call him up and we talk for probably 10 minutes, I give him all the specs on my combo, engine, gears, what I'm doing with it, the whole nine yards. The cam he recommends is smaller than the Hughes hydraulic that was in my 340 at the time. I call Hughes give them all the same info and they recommend two flat solids, I chose the bigger of the two. It's ran 6.57 in the 1/8 on radials and pump 93.

Maybe that's why my buddies 406, roller cam on race gas was only a tenth faster than my 340 .
