Ok, here's the deal. My buddy and I have had a constant debate about the color of the decal placed on Superbirds. I have a hemi orange bird that I bought in the early 80's. It had been repainted but the wing was the original paint. All my decals were white. According to my research and Monroe from the old DSAC, hemi orange cars got the white decals and the lighter orange cars (vitamin C) got the black decals. My bud bought his hemi orange bird in the late 80's and it is not original paint, either. His decals are black. His claim is that he has seen many restored hemi orange birds with black decals and surely they are correct. He thinks they could come either way. Any original owners out there? What do you say?

There was a new Hemi Orange bird at the dealer in 1970, it had black decals.

EV2 White - Blue Fire Metallic,Tor-Red,Corporate Blue

EK2 Black - White,Vitamin C,Lime Lite,Lemon Twist

I have "never" seen an "original" paint car with anything other than above.

Lime light could have either white or black. My buddy has an original paint lime light car with white decals. This is the only color I'm aware of that could get either color.

Well, the installation instructions tell me what i wanted to know. I went down to the dealership in 2010 and wanted a Challenger. They had an orange one on the floor with some funny custom strips they had a local company install. If a customer wanted a change, then the dealer would do it for them to sell the car. People have different taste and want different colors. There is a guy here in Texas that ordered an AAR. His buddy ordered a TA challenger. The buds car had the 340 six pack under the stripe and he wanted one on his AAR. The dealer put one on.

I'm not doubting you guys on your original sitings stories, but I want the proof from the factory. Any original owners of hemi orange birds out there? I'm sure a few slipped out the wrong way, but to me hemi orange should have white decals.

This is a "survivor" unrestored car...

Hmm! This looks good for proof so far, Sprocket! Sure wish I would have bet you a crab leg dinner on this! Looks like white is the proper color on EV2. I noticed a you tube video where a bunch of guys where showing of a EV2 bird and it had been fully restored with the black strips. I think it is a common mistake in a restoration to make. Most think they could come either way so they put on the decals they want to look at the most. Black seems logical because of the black top. I hardly think that a worker who was instructed by an installation sheet, would not follow instructions and put the wrong color decal on the car. After all, that part was done at creative industries by the same crew and they should have made them all the same.

Creative didn't do the Birds. I think black is possible on a V2 because the process was performed by humans....but it should be white. After all - they did screw up the paint color on a few...

Are you sure creative did not do the birds? I think they did.

What Dan said. Creative was involved as a supplier. But they did not do the actual conversion work like they did on the Daytonas.

Every once in a while, you see a car that originally had non-standard decals. Rick Edwards Limelight Superbird (right side of photo) is all original and still has has white decals.

Obvious ones like white decals on a white car probably wouldn't happen. I think I have seen a very old photo of white decals on a yellow car, but I have no way to verify if it was original or not.

OK, I knew they built the noses. It has been a few years since I read the info on the building process.

Here is an interesting one. A Lemon Twist Superbird with white decals. Original owner was an older lady, as in over 60 years of age. The car was taken off the road in 1972 at 25,800 miles with engine trouble. The next (and current) owner took this photo in 1975 shortly after buying the car with the engine still disassembled. (He talked them down to $800 bucks by the way.) So based on that info, are they original? I would say, based on the timeline and condition shown in the photo, probably.

This is a GREAT thread!
When I first bought my car I was told you couldn't get white decals on a green Bird. I spent a lot of time talking to other owners and looking for concrete answers but I knew the wing was original paint and most likely original decals.

I've done my share of research about the 'birds and while I'm not making myself out to be an expert...I do know that decal colors varied on certain body colors.

There was Chrysler documentation about how they "should" have been....as seen above...but we also have to think about how the cars were built.

When these cars were built, they weren't built as "collectibles". The assembly personnel were just sending cars out the door. In my opinion, it would be very easy to have the "wrong" color decals on a car...and who would care? Well, as long as they were the same color on both sides!

Now, 40 years later we all seem to think things on these cars are absolute. I know from the cars I've restored...the exception is the rule.
