So I decided that I want to learn how to build my own 904's. Disassembly went well but I need some help with how to remove the sprag. My book shows the outer ring being recessed in the case I think that's 727. Do I pound or drill these rivet this GS intthis 904?? Thanks for helping me pop my transmission cherry!!

Not sure, kinda doing this as a practice run. If the one in the car is hurt it will be the sprag but that's converted to a bolt in. So I guess just to do it??? Not sure really lol

If you are going to use the trans ... I would not worry about it. Parts trans? .. I would knock if out through the bolt holes on the opposite side.

first of all on a 904 the outer sprag race is riveted to the case no reason to remove it

727 race can be removed with a punch through the bolt holes as stated

70 duster full chassis super pro 416 CNC Indybrock heads 727 w/brake

best so far 1.212 60 6.219 in 1/8 at 110.88 9.768 at 137.81 1/4

And to add to the above as I just finished my 1st 727, don't waste a dime on the usual bolt-in sprag. It's a waste of money. I just put one in mine. You can get new rollers/springs for the one in the case for under $5. The only bolt in one I'd buy next time would be the Coan Super Sprag or equivelant. These are the real deal. Larger & more rollers to actually prevent the roll over.

If you haven't used one of the "Super Sprags yet( StockC6 Ford, I think) don't waste your time and money A freind of mine did and it failed in his race car also But he, his race car, is hard on 8 3/4 rear ends

I think they are C6 sprags. Looking to beef this one up as a spare and to have the knowledge. I don't think Coan has a 904 super spray. I saw a 727 listed but no 904 and idk for sure if they cross over.

My 3340lb, 9.25@146 Belvedere has the original 1965 sprag. No low band apply. So did my 10.20@132 3450lb 63 Dodge. The Dodge had over 1000 passes on the trans, the Plymouth 90 so far. Good drum and a shield.

Guess I'll stick with a stock sprag on my next trans as well. Sad to hear those Super Sprags aren't really any better.

Possibly, broke an axle the other night on the launch. The trans I experimented with today was out of a parted out car. Just felt confident today and wanted to learn

904's seldom have issues with the sprag failing. I would only replace the entire unit is it's damaged. Otherwise I would get a set of new rollers and springs and go with that and call it good. If you want a heavy duty unit, ATI sell one for around $350
Incidentally, the very few 904 transmissions I have seen with a damaged sprag have usually junked the case as well.

sorry Cab I will disagree with you on this I have used a number of them with 0 failures, it is a c6 spring and roller set up.

As someone who has built 1000,s of transmissions over the last 27 years I can count the number of c6 sprag failures on my fingers and have some left over

Its design with more rollers in basically the same amount of room makes it almost impossible to roll them over.

I already wrecked the bolt in sprag in my good trans when it ripped the perches off a while back

727 or 904 ?

If 727 was it a coan or A+A super sprag , if not a regular bolt in is no better than a stock unit that is not loose in the case.

904 as stated in first post. It seems like the 904 sprag setup is stronger?

Where can I get new springs and rollers?

check out WitTrans. They're online and have a nice blowup of the trans parts. Good prices too. Picked up a bunch of stuff from them & Matko Transmissions. I'm a rookie as well but for the couple dollars, I wouldn't reuse the sprag parts in my trans.
