Just curious where you acquired these photos that I took PERSONALLY in late 1976 and early 1977 while working at Carlton's shop on the Lukas car? As I recall, prior to them being on my new website that just went live TWO WEEKS ago, only Hemi Fred would have had them previously.

Here is the local "outlaw" track (Hudson Dragway). Clyde told me that this was a favorite place for "Run What Ya Brung" match racing, using plenty of rosin! Nicholson, Sox, Durham etc. etc. all raced here. I believe admission was either 1.00 or 2.00. Nice dirt entrance.

P.S. Yes, two of the photos were from my new website. Thanks for the credits! I suppose you were at Carlton's too, getting there JUST AFTER Hayes and I left.

Here I am sitting on a cinder block on the line at Hudson Dragway. Bill Hayes took the photo. Check out the "Tree" hanging from horizontal cables above me. If you get out of shape here, you really have a problem. Also notice that the shutdown area goes uphill. If that did not stop you, then the trees at the top would. If you somehow went through the trees, you went over the cliff.

You can't make this up.

That is oval track fabrication guru and welder extraordinaire Bill Hayes of Paterson, NJ. He and I were sent by Lukas to work on the Aspen while Don and Clyde were "stretching" the Gold Colt.

Look at all them Hemi's!

In the background, that is the rolling chassis of the Gold Colt during the stretching process, sitting outside on jack stands. I don't remember what was going on with the early model Colt.

The small entrance door would direct you toward the engine assembly room. That is the only area that was off limits to Hayes and I.

This shot is of the Gold Colt after the stretch.

Early 77.

The wheelbase of the car was lengthened, and also was to be modified to have the hood and WINDSHIELD come off as one unit (at least that is what they told us on that day!). Remember, the Winternationals was only a few weeks away. This was the last time we saw this car in person.

Here is the reverse view of the black Duster, while I stood next to the trailer in the other example of my photo that was "borrowed".

The blue Dart Sport!

I don't remember who owned the Chevelle.

I probably have two dozen more photos, and one of the Springs Road Auto Sales banners they had on the wall.

During our stay there, they treated us to our first-ever visit to a "fish camp" which was somewhere out in the local "woods". As Jersey guys, we had no idea what they were talking about. Upon arrival, we then discovered that a fish camp was a family-style restaurant with everything from oysters to shrimp. All fried of course. I am still trying to pry open my arteries from that experience!

Also, one day we went out for lunch to a little place in Lenoir. I got out of the car and naturally locked the door. Clyde said "You don't have to do that here, and we don't even lock up the race shop". I asked why not, and he said that "In these parts, anyone that gets caught messing with someone else's stuff will be DE-NUTTED!" After lunch, we went back to the shop and I watched Don feed his three-legged dog. He said "He doesn't even know its gone". Just two regular guys who built great cars.

Quite an experience! Don and Clyde were fantastic hosts, and we were very fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend two weeks there!

OK I guess I am caught red handed . Borrowed is such a great word compared to "STOLEN".

I saw your post on Moparts General today.(Great Site) I just knew that Mike Ricketts would love those 2 pics. .
Plus I am a sucker for any "MISSILE" photos.

Your collection is quite interesting. Unfortunately, mine are the only ones I have, other than a shot at Englishtown in one of the other Dart Sports.

Don and Clyde had invited us to come back down, with Lukas, when the Aspen was finished, but as we know, only a few months later, the tragedy of the test session unfolded.
