I've done a lot of racing in my 39 years at the track (usually every weekend from late March to early November) and I have never seen a Chevy transmission blow like that. Now Mopars I have and several of them.

Glad i picked the lowly powerglide then.

The only transmission I have never seen do that is a C-6.

I can not for the life of me understand why some people still try to run a fast car with a 727 with a stock drum. It is no secret what happens if you get sloppy or break a rear.

ATI has built a heavy case for the Powerglide and now the TH400. We need to lobby him for a heavy 727 case. He likes Mopars and we need his help.

I'll not run a th400 or a glide but my next 727 build (this winter) will have a steel drum to go with the LBA CRT valve body I already have.

In 1963 I managed to blow up a Ford automatic. My mother had a 1962 Ford station wagon, 352 2 barrel, Cruiseomatic, 9" 3.00 EquaLock and it would not do a burnout. I discovered that if I started from a roll, slipped it into neutral, revved the hell out of it and slammed the trans into low it would produce a satisfactory patch. The last time I did it the transmission completely exploded! The only pieces left were a few chunks of aluminum under the trans to block bolts. I sold my innocence to my mother somehow and Ford replaced the transmission under warranty!! After 50 years, I can tell the tale. Never did it again. And my new toy will get all the most bulletproof parts I can find because my grandchildren will be racing it!

If you are running as hard as you are and not using the best parts, you are running on borrowed time. Better to give it a rest, save your pennies and start from the rear forward with the upgrades. You will be a lot more comfortable in the car knowing that you can concentrate on the race and not be thinking about a weak part that is about to fail.

Our Duster grenaded like that, except for the flames, right after the launch. I was not driving it, but the guy who was lifted in 1st gear due to it spinning so bad at the hit. I know better and have been driving without LBA for so long it does not matter. But we also put a full CF sheild on it.

The amount of shrapnel in the car was really scary. The guy had his foot broken in 2-3 places and the floor was opened like a tin can and then shot with a 12ga...scary

I did grenade the Dana 60 and one cam shaft in it this year though...

Dont worry Dom... I'm just like you... stock drum
in my car... but I did spit the caps on my first
8 3/4 so now it has the alum center.... if people
would realize WHY the sprag breaks they wouldnt do
stupid stuff.... if the car spins... SHIFT it.. dont
pedal it... if you unload the sprag then slam it back
in it might roll it over... then you get the drum
spinning 2.2 times the engine RPM... plus that can
ONLY happen in low/1st gear.. thats why you need to
get into 2nd gear

I'm glad my big, clunky 46RE is computer controlled and shifted to 2nd at 6,000 rpm whether it's spinning or not. Although I DO worry about it even with the blanket on it. I'm saving my nickels and dimes for a good race trans instead of the beefed-up factory boat anchor. LOL

A good Friend of mine blew up a 727 clutch flight in his high 8 second front engine dragster at Norwalk. It was real ugly and hit a guy in the stands on his head. Another guy passed out when he saw the guy bleeding. My Friends tranny blanket looked like ground up tiger hair fiberglass and the case spin and one of the lugs bent his chrome moly cage. He was VERY lucky that day.

Actually if you turn 6000 rpm it wont blow the drum..
even if you spin the sprag..(but your getting close)..
you need to be above 6200 rpm if the drum is in decent
shape... thats why you dont really see any production
engine blowing up the trans... plus the stock trans
is LBA(even years ago)... the manual valve body ones
are where the problem starts

Thanks. That makes me feel a little better. I try to limit it to 7,000 but logs show signs of over-exuberance at times. The computer is set to shift 1-2 at 6,000 but it usually doesn't happen until 6400. I just can't manage to keep an intermediate shaft or support in it for some reason. I've welded the shaft to the support twice now.
