I need to pull my transmisison for some refurb work and starting to look at how to disconnect my drive shaft. Car is a 1974 Dodge Challenger and the trans is an A833.

Looks like the rear end side of the shaft is pretty straight forward. Just the four bolts.

Transmission side of the shaft doesn't have the same bolts so I'm assuming it's some type of clip inside.

Any special tools to help get the job done? I have a lift and high jack stand, high trans jack already.

Just unbolt the straps at the back, and slide the entire thing out of the transmission...no need to unhook anything up front.

(Once you unbolt the back you will see the front is a slip joint and will just slide out towards the back)

To remove the driveshaft itself from the front yoke, you remove the little ujoint clips and press it apart.

The whole assembly should slide right out of the transmission.

Drop the back and the front slides right out on a spline. Have a container handy in case the trans fluid comes out the open end.

Put tape around u-joint caps on rear so they dint fall off after you unbolt joint.

hacksaw the shaft in two in the middle, then have it welded back together. Or a new one made.

I don't know, 74 challenger is a pretty special car and might be different than the rest?

Are you sure of the procedure used in removing the trans? It's a lot more complcated then pulling a driveshaft.

We all have to start somewhere. The most important thing is to make sure the car is supported properly. It's hard to pull the driveshaft with the car on top of you. Be safe!

lol, thanks for all the suggestions. I wasn't sure if it slipped out or not. First time for me so yeah you're all popping my cherry and busting my ass. Fun as all heck getting dirty though.

As for the trans.. it's my first one as well.. Looks like the trans cross member has to come off and just 4 bolts on the trans.. That slides out too right?

All the little things too like removing the speedo cable and the shift handle, linkage as required, draining the fluid..

Car is on a bendpak HD-9 lift, parking break set, wheels double chocked. As for supporting the engine, should I be using a high jack stand under that or perhaps my engine hoist from the top? All are available options.

Make sure you unbolt the converter from the flexplate and spray paint the flexplate ear and corresponding area of the converter so it goes back together the same. One ear has an offset and will only line up one way. Don't forget the starter, trans cooler lines, neutral safety switch wires, speedometer cable and linkages. Dipstick tube should be removed when you remove the bolt holding it to the bellhousing. It is a press-fit with O-ring at the trans end.

It actually is possible to unbolt just the crossmember and bellhousing (with the misc. stuff)and "slide" the trans out of the converter. But you risk binding or bending the converter input shafts that way. You'd never get it back together that way either.

Had to mention that since this is your first trans removal.

Oh...and disconnect the battery before removing the wires from the starter. When removing the trans, watch the distributor so it doesn't crack against the firewall and that the fan doesn't damage the radiator or shroud as the engine tilts back.

I like to use a plywood square between a big floor jack pad and the trans pan.

That should cover it!

Loco ,he said 4 bolts holding it in so I would think stick rather than auto. If it is a stick be ready to pull it all the way out at one time so you clear the clutch assembly. You can rest the nose of the shaft on the bell housing lip if necessary. Be prepared to lift a heavy weight. That trans is not light and if you have one or can rent one get a trans jack for either stick or auto. I have R&Rd both on my back in the driveway but I was young and strong back then.

It's a manual trans. Thanks for the tips here. I have a transmission jack for sure. No way I'd try this without one.

Progress - drive shaft is out. Was pretty simple with the tips for working it out. unbolted the rear and dropped it and the other end slipped right out.. Had the oil catch set up and ready for the drips...

Looks like a touch of surface rust near the end. Worth cleaning that up while I wait for my transmission work to be completed?

Get a pogo stick to hold the engine up while you remove the transmission.
