Priced a NEW 2013 Ram 2500 Diesel 4-door 4wd....$52,500+8.4% Tax!!!!!!! Really? that's nuts!
I bought my last brand new diesel in '99 it was $32k..Granted that's a few years, but respectively, other vehicles have nt increased in price nearly as much.

It is pretty ridiculous. If you're truly in the market, I'd reccomend calling Dave Smith in Kellog Idaho, Largest Volume dealer in the country, so they sell at low margins and move tons of inventory.

Any one who spends $50K on any truck is insane in the membrain ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif) The labor cost to build a new vehicle is crazy high. When the customers start saying enough is enough (quit going up to their eyeballs in debt to buy one) then they will sell them at more affordable prices.

I bought my V-10 3500 new in '02. Paid 30k at the time for a work truck. Friends asked me why I paid that much and I told them they aren't getting any cheaper. I put that purchase off for 8 years and had to make my move to still get that body style. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif)
On a related note I just read a Truck Trend comparison of the new Ram and F-150 v-6 half ton work trucks. BOTH were economically priced at 34K! ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/image_294343.gif)

Since the one I bought new back in '99, I have, and never will buy a new vehicle again. I just bought another 2001 last Nov after my '01 I was driving got totalled by an idiot that pulled out in front of me...Loved and miss that truck. 6-speed HO ext cab short bed...Was an awesome truck.
Bought another '01 same way this past year because I had less than 2 weeks to find somthing. I paind $14k for both...I have to tell you, this one is turned up a smidge and its a beast...mileage is really good too, its paid for in another two years and was thinking a second pick-up would be great, but man the prices are nuts.
I do not need blue tooth, back-up camera's, speaker phone, or any other gitchagoomies, just a truck. Hell I don't even want ABS or an automatic...No center console, nothing...built in brake control and air ride would be nice, but I don't know who pays $60k for a stupid truck.

My friend bought a new cummins last year, stickered around 51k, think he paid like 45k. He sold his 05 for 20k to use as a down payment. He works for a large company that does bridges/roads. He gets something like 600 a month if he used his own vehicle. So basically his employer is paying for a truck he gets to keep. The 05 he got the same way. However I know he'd still be driving the 05 if this wasn't the case. I'd never pay 50k for a vehicle that will drop in price just driving it off the lot ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh2.gif) I will say this though, the truck rides better than most cars I've been in. I personally don't drive enough to want anything newer than my 01.

I'd never pay that kinda money for a truck...thats ridiculous! Then again, I'm very happy driving my 86 Ram 4x4 that I bought for 2 grand in near mint condition I'll never understand why a truck guy would want bluetooth, leather, abs, etc. I don't even need AC in my truck... ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

they are priced that way because they can be, i.e. people buy them. if you look at inflation over the years vs. how wages have risen, it's surprising anyone can afford anything. It is also much more expensive to simply do business, energy costs are insane, workplace safety is a cost factor, computer equipment is out of site and let's face it the auto industry is more software than anything now. that stuff is very expensive and you don't just buy it once and be done with it
One thing you get in a new vehicle that no older vehicle has is safety. You may like that 1980s truck or 1960s car, but the fact of the matter is you are way more likely to die in one in even a minor crash. A small frontal offset crash in a vehicle not designed to sustain one will turn you into a red sardine. That's why vehicles are much heavier now - they have much more design in the structure, for occupant safety, and also a lot more metal.
yes they may be a lot more expensive now, and more expensive than they need to be, but have you priced raw materials, labor, and health insurance lately? Businesses exist to do one thing only, make profit. most car companies are not banking ungodly amounts of profit, so think to yourself where is that money going. It is what it is, and everything else is the same way too. It's an unfortunate reality of the world today.
I agree about the glut of modern conveniences, but given enough time they become standard, like heaters, air conditioning, power steering.. I bet many people laughed at those when they first came out, but they become the new norm as people drove longer and longer and more often. and then it is hard to imagine life without them. Bluetooth saves lives for example. backup cameras and proximity sensors save kids from distracted adults. Plus, there ARE a lot of people out there that simply do like those things, and if company X is providing them and you are not, then you lose sales. And again, this is about moving product.
If you have the money to buy new, do it. a good alternative is to buy a few years old and let someone else take that initial depreciation.

Cummins was FORCED to use DEF even when they passed all the emissions tests without it. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eyes.gif) Ferd and Chivvy ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.gif) until the gubmint told Cummins they had to. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tsk.gif)

Unfortuneatly there's some things you have to get with any vehicle. You want a work truck and unless you buy it new it usually is an abused beast and has no trade-in value no matter how well it's was or was not maintained. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif)

I call BS on that.
Cummins met emissions using an LNT, but at the cost of 7-10 % fuel economy loss and several thousand dollars of Rhodium and Platinum in the LNT.
Ford and GM made the hard choice to use an SCR system (requires user interface, ie refilling DEF tank with Urea). The SCR systems meet NOx emissions with little fuel economy penalty.
The SCR system is a cost reduction (for the OEM) and a fuel economy improvement (for the customer) compared to the earlier systems.
The Government sets PERFORMANCE standards. The OEM is free to select / develop any technology to meet that performance standard..

The DEF isn't that big of a deal to me. Its about $9 for a 2.5 gallon jug if you shop around. It only is required every 6500-8000 miles or so. The trucks give you 800-1000 miles heads up that the DEF is getting low. If you run out with a 1000 mile warning your an idiot lol. We have had two trucks with DEF systems here at work(one duramax one 6.7 powerstroke) and both performed flawlessly. I really wish our 08 Peterbuilt with the 8.3 cummins took DEF, we have had tons of emissions problems with it. The check engine light is like a turn signal its on and off so much lol.

Diesel option (Cummins) alone is around $10,000, plus the heavier frame, bigger wheels and tires, more capacity, that's why the 2500 is so much more...
Trucks have a HUGE mark-up (as opposed to small cars, which have very little). Negotiate. I've purchased several Rams from Woodhouse in Blair, Nebraska. My whole family drives Rams (practically), if you include my Dad (now deceased, but had a 2004 and a 2008 both bought new), my father-in-law (2009 Ram 1500 new), and my brother-in-law (2011 Ram 2500 reg cab, traded for 2012 Ram 2500 Crew Cab) all bought new. All purchased for well under $10,000 below sticker on every one of them. PLENTY of room for negotiation.
Woodhouse has been very good to us, and they sell and deliver to all 50 states, so check them out! Woodhouse has a great website, too...

I guess I "done good"! Was able to pay 32K total for a new 2011 Dodge Ram 3500 dually, standard cab with manual OD transmission,,,in the whole Houston area there were only two white ones with standard cab with manual transmissions! Other related issue-I know a well read mechanic that believes that there is a systematic collusion between government that has been lobbied into having all these high dollar electronic systems installed in autos etc that are made by the same companies that make electronics for the military,,,really who needs idiot light to tell you that air pressure is low??? read tach, speedo, etc in windshield like fighter pilots? Lot of these laws that require sensors etc are passed under the save the earth from pollution pitch...Quien Sabe??????????
I work for one of those 'dirty awful govt defense contractors' and I will tell you right now if your theory was true than nobody would be able to afford a new vehicle. Its usually the opposite actually. We use alot of what is called 'COTS' or commercial off the shelf in some areas. Chrysler and GM trying to have the futuristic look were big on digital dashboards in the 80's and early 90's and HUD's were a progression from that... Corvette comes to mind as offering one and that is not a cheap car by any means.
TPMS was finally forced on everything due to the retards who cant be bothered to ever check the tire pressure on their high riding SUV until it has a blowout and rolls because the individual cant recover from it. The Ford exploder firestone tire debacle was the nail in the coffin on that one.
I am not an advocate for electronic nannys, let darwin run his course. The world would be a far less messed up one if those people had removed themselves from the pool via natural selection.

Yes it is a 6.7 liter CC Dually 4x4. Just made a trip to Oklahoma city and back pulling my 28' enclosed hauling cars each way and averaged 13.5 going 70+ each way. The 4.56 gear aint helping the fuel mileage any for sure. But it pulls like a dream and plenty of power.
I know the beatings are coming for buying a Ford but they seem to hold their value much better than the Dodges. Got 24 for my blowed up 6.0 2005 2wd F350 CC Dually.
