Priced a NEW 2013 Ram 2500 Diesel 4-door 4wd....$52,500+8.4% Tax!!!!!!! Really? that's nuts!

I bought my last brand new diesel in '99 it was $32k..Granted that's a few years, but respectively, other vehicles have nt increased in price nearly as much.

There is plenty of room for negotiating

It is pretty ridiculous. If you're truly in the market, I'd reccomend calling Dave Smith in Kellog Idaho, Largest Volume dealer in the country, so they sell at low margins and move tons of inventory.

Based upon inflation numbers a 32K truck in 1999 should be a 44.8K truck in 2013 - so it might make since. Plus the 1999 truck does not have near the features, power, ride, etc... of the 2013.

It does suck though it seems everything goes up but our wallets (at least mine) does not ever seem to have more in it.

Any one who spends $50K on any truck is insane in the membrain

The labor cost to build a new vehicle is crazy high.

When the customers start saying enough is enough (quit going up to their eyeballs in debt to buy one) then they will sell them at more affordable prices.

Yep. No reason a vehicle should cost as much or more than some houses. Yet people pay

Me too! Don't get me wrong, I new truck would be killer.........it's the debt for me that stops me.

I can argue the plusses of having a new one, compared to used stuff, but.......for me...my mortgage is all we've got as far as debt goes and that's freaking enough for me.

I bought my V-10 3500 new in '02. Paid 30k at the time for a work truck. Friends asked me why I paid that much and I told them they aren't getting any cheaper. I put that purchase off for 8 years and had to make my move to still get that body style.

On a related note I just read a Truck Trend comparison of the new Ram and F-150 v-6 half ton work trucks. BOTH were economically priced at 34K!

Since the one I bought new back in '99, I have, and never will buy a new vehicle again. I just bought another 2001 last Nov after my '01 I was driving got totalled by an idiot that pulled out in front of me...Loved and miss that truck. 6-speed HO ext cab short bed...Was an awesome truck.

Bought another '01 same way this past year because I had less than 2 weeks to find somthing. I paind $14k for both...I have to tell you, this one is turned up a smidge and its a beast...mileage is really good too, its paid for in another two years and was thinking a second pick-up would be great, but man the prices are nuts.

I do not need blue tooth, back-up camera's, speaker phone, or any other gitchagoomies, just a truck. Hell I don't even want ABS or an automatic...No center console, nothing...built in brake control and air ride would be nice, but I don't know who pays $60k for a stupid truck.

I don't need a lot of "creature comforts" as such, but it's always nice to load up the truck with all the heavy duty stuff. I thi nk pretty well everthing comes with A/C now....I'd want the power windows/locks/nice sound system etc....but when the price of a 3500 4x4 Cummins powered truck the way I want it nudges 75 Grand up here....my '92 will have to do. Crazy dam prices. I don't know how some people afford that stuff.....and live the accustomed life they're used to.

My friend bought a new cummins last year, stickered around 51k, think he paid like 45k. He sold his 05 for 20k to use as a down payment. He works for a large company that does bridges/roads. He gets something like 600 a month if he used his own vehicle. So basically his employer is paying for a truck he gets to keep. The 05 he got the same way. However I know he'd still be driving the 05 if this wasn't the case. I'd never pay 50k for a vehicle that will drop in price just driving it off the lot I will say this though, the truck rides better than most cars I've been in. I personally don't drive enough to want anything newer than my 01.

I would be near 5-10K of the price tag is due to all the emission gitchagoomies these new diesels have lol.

Do the cummins trucks use the DEF yet?

I'd never pay that kinda money for a truck...thats ridiculous!

Then again, I'm very happy driving my 86 Ram 4x4 that I bought for 2 grand in near mint condition

I'll never understand why a truck guy would want bluetooth, leather, abs, etc.

I don't even need AC in my truck...

they are priced that way because they can be, i.e. people buy them. if you look at inflation over the years vs. how wages have risen, it's surprising anyone can afford anything. It is also much more expensive to simply do business, energy costs are insane, workplace safety is a cost factor, computer equipment is out of site and let's face it the auto industry is more software than anything now. that stuff is very expensive and you don't just buy it once and be done with it

One thing you get in a new vehicle that no older vehicle has is safety. You may like that 1980s truck or 1960s car, but the fact of the matter is you are way more likely to die in one in even a minor crash. A small frontal offset crash in a vehicle not designed to sustain one will turn you into a red sardine. That's why vehicles are much heavier now - they have much more design in the structure, for occupant safety, and also a lot more metal.

yes they may be a lot more expensive now, and more expensive than they need to be, but have you priced raw materials, labor, and health insurance lately? Businesses exist to do one thing only, make profit. most car companies are not banking ungodly amounts of profit, so think to yourself where is that money going. It is what it is, and everything else is the same way too. It's an unfortunate reality of the world today.

I agree about the glut of modern conveniences, but given enough time they become standard, like heaters, air conditioning, power steering.. I bet many people laughed at those when they first came out, but they become the new norm as people drove longer and longer and more often. and then it is hard to imagine life without them. Bluetooth saves lives for example. backup cameras and proximity sensors save kids from distracted adults. Plus, there ARE a lot of people out there that simply do like those things, and if company X is providing them and you are not, then you lose sales. And again, this is about moving product.

If you have the money to buy new, do it. a good alternative is to buy a few years old and let someone else take that initial depreciation.

and beside the V8/auto swap that was my idea, I haven't had to do a thing to my $300 '88 I bought three years ago.

It used to be a 3 year loan to buy a vehicle max. Now it's 7 years, the car makers have forced the 7 year loans on people to keep the payment down. All these financial geniuses see is the monthly payment when they sign on the dotted line.
I'll never have a car payment again and I'll never buy a new truck again either.

I have a newer truck... I do not buy new, I wait and get 2-3-4 year with 30-75,000 miles for about half price. my current 05 CTD 4x4 quad cab short bed, cost me $20,000 with 40,000 miles. new sticker at the time was $40,000.. it has been paid off for almost a year.

I'll most likely own this truck till I retire..
