BINGO! I'd imagine someone did a cut-and-hack job to a six cylinder k-member or sourced an incorrect k-member for the conversion. I've seen it done before. You may want to look into your k-member closer or complete the cut-and-hack job with a ball peen hammer to the oil pan.

If this was my car, I'd shim the mounts with 3/8" aluminum (or steel) plate, install a Milodon tray with improved return slots and top it off with a repop of the 70-71 6qt 440HP/440-6/Hemi pan and pick up.

A windage tray doesn't start to work at 5000rpm, there are some HP gains at lower RPMs also. A HP gain is secondary to the best thing about them, they aid in oil control and reduce the amount oil aeration (air bubbles in oil).

that is not the original pan that would have been used on a 1970 R/T , that pan is made for a 72-73 C body . A 1970 E body R/T would have had the 70-71 6bbl/hemi pan.

So, could the pan have been the problem all along? As I've said I am going to replace it and reinstall the windage tray. Think I'll be OK if I go with the proper pan? Want to make sure before I order anything. THANX

Also, what would be involved with shimming the engine?? Looking at the mounts, not sure how to do this

The ears bolt to the block, the stud fastens to the K member, place a shim with a hole in it between the mount and K.

It's possible you have a aftermarket mount that is thinner than OEM which is lowering your motor.

If I shim 3/4" is there any concerns about driveshaft alignment? Should I consider any additional shimming in the transmission mount?

I would do a baseline driveline check before you do anything to see where your at:
http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/axle/8.html

I would check the transmission mount for what it currently has or doesn't have for shims.

Take the 2 bolts out of the tranny mount and gently jack the tranny up to see how much it takes to get the pan off the center link before the transmission hits the tunnel.

Depending on what you currently have for shims on the tranny mount I would use a combination of engine mount and transmission mount shims to get some clearance...BUT you definitely need a new and correct oil pan, again the repop 6 quart is my choice.

One you get some clearance check your driveline angle again.
You might have to add/remove shims to get your driveline angle acceptable.

That's what I was thinking also. Could be the PO sourced a K-frame and steering linkage combo together that are incorrect for the car. Pan looks (though hard to tell from pics) as though it sits it fairly correct level with respect to bottom of k-frame - even considering dentage in pan (mine many years ago looked similarly - don't ask). Perhaps the pitman arm and idler arm combo sit too high with respect to the k-frame...

Might be worth taking some measurements of pitman arm and idler arm (lengths and downward offsets) to compare to an owner here with same vehicle/engine combo...

They have proven to be worth 15 HP at and above 5000 RPM on engine dyno tetsts done by Ma Mopra many times, the higher the RPM the higher the gain

But,unless you drag race or street race how often do you see 5000 RPM's ?

At least once every time I take it out longer than 15 minutes.
