I just ordered a pair of AMD fenders to modify to fit 315's under the front of my Challenger. I'll put away my original fenders just in case it doesn't work out or I don't like the look and want to return the car to stock. Hope to get at it in the next month or 2?
I'm thinking of something like on the Javelin?
I have rolled AMD fenders on my car and I think I can fit 315/30-18 BFG Rivals on 10.5" wheels if I wanted to. A 315 is about 12.5" wide physically so it should fit. While it fits a 10.5" wheel, I feel that a 315 tire is a better fit for an 11" wheel to fully utilize the contact patch of the tire. Problem is that an 11" wheel is more difficult to fit without having bumpsteer issues on my car. 315's should fit on 10.5's with rolled fenders no flares needed
Curious as to how you figure a wider tire ( 1/2") will give you bumpsteer issues?

Not the tire, an 11 inch front wheel may interfere with my tire rod which is lower due to the Hotchkis bumpsteer spacers I'm running. I don't actually know as I don't have 11's just 10.5's. If I were running 315's I would use 11's in order to maximize the contact patch and the mechanical grip
Ah gotcha! Yes I'm planning on an 11" rim

I've always liked those F-body flares. I've ordered a set for my Volare. Yeah, I know, not an A body. Greg

Would a fiberglass fender be a better/easier starting point for adding flares?
1, it will be easier yes.
2, it will be way lighter.
3, it will save a stock fender.
My car has cherry original paint fenders, and they need some cutting. I almost wish they weren't so nice...

Personally, i think Challenger guys are just stuck with the max track they can jam into the stock (modified) metal. I have never once seen a remotely well-done flaring on a Challenger. Its just not a good design to modify in that way aesthetically. If i had to flare a Challenger i'd be more inclined to just do something outrageous and drastic than try and make something subtle or crafty work.
Some cars have all the luck... like 70-73 F-bodies, Mopar F-bodies (and i dont mean the supercoupe bolt on mess), hell even 71-2 Roadrunners could be made to work, but the Challenger, Demon, 71-up Charger, etc... the lines that make them cool ruin any hope ov flaring them at the same time. Cars with subtle factory flares like the Cuda, early Camaro, Javelin/AMX, Mustang FB, etc... CAN be done well.

Do you have any pictures of Challenger with custom flares? I searched for an hour or so but didn't find any? Cuda's (70-74)have about the same flare as a Challenger ?

Mine are mint too, that's why I bought new ones to play with.... they make more everyday?

The wheel opening on A bodies and Challengers do not lend themselves well to flares, IMO. They tend to be too flat on top to make a nice radius without looking out of place. A widebody type conversion would be tough to do on either one of these too. B bodies lend themselves well to this approach because of their coke bottle design. It could be possible on an A or E body, but require a bit of surgery to not destroy the original lines yet get a significant flare. These guys have done some late model Challengers and Chargers along with a host of other makes; http://tsdidit.com/?page_id=15

Brad... I'm sure you know and have seen plenty of pics, that my fronts and rears are gently flared.. they are barely noticable as compared from a distance (even up close!) to stock fenders.... FRONTS were easy (1-night).. lips tucked in and gently pulled. REARS (1-night each) had the lips cut at their welds, about every 4" or so, they were tucked flush, re-welded and smoothed, after being gently pulled outwards. In fact, I can still attach the factory chrome lips if I wanted. (Credit due to my best friend who is a professional body shop owner, and Mopar-guy!)
These mods were done to accomodate my race rims (16x10 with 5" bs... which actually slightly pushes the wheel/tire outwards that extra 1/2"... bs should actually properly be 5.5" to retain proper centering to the stock position inside the wheelwell), and with then 255-50-16 race DOT autocross tires... and the ride height had already been lowered, etc.) Later, I went to 275-45-16 tires (Hoosier A6) and had no problems... the stiff suspension also helps prevent fender/tire contact... I can put my pinky finger between the tire and fenders, and at full turn/lock in the fronts have ~1/4" clearance... no problems at all.
If you're going to try the big ~315s in the fronts, you'll have to massage the lips however needed, likely a little more than what I did. I still highly recommend stiffer TBs, especially with your BB engine...at least 1.18 (or better yet 1.22 or 1.24 ... FF can make them for you.)... I love my 1.24 TBs!
Someday, I might go to ~315s in the fronts (and ~315 or ~335s rears). The clubs/classes that I race in allow fender mods, even full flares... but I wanted to keep the stockish appearance... I've gotten lots of compliments on how the fenders were barely modified and still look stock.

Thanks guys! Next step will be to do some measuring and order some rims, then mount the tire and see what I need to do? BigBlockMopar sorry to hijack your post I'll start another one when I get started and have the rims etc...
